Not the piece of technocrap I expected it to be
Having no previous experience with MP3 players, I was uncertain about this purchase. However, it is living up to my best expectations. For a reasonable price, I wanted to make the favorite music in my CD collection portable and more easily accessible. And this little iRiver has allowed me to do just that. I've been able to rip the music, organize and title it to my liking, and simply drag and drop it into the player. I might wish I could have afforded the 1GB player, but still have managed to cram over 60 songs onto this one at a 256kbps setting. The sound quality is really good; I prefer headphones to ear buds and I could easily deafen myself with the lightweight Sony MDR-W08s I'm using. I am in no way dissatisfied with battery life and appreciate having a battery usage icon on the display so I know when to carry a spare. One feature I like most is the equalizer; it comes with a number of presets but also has two user settings -- one general in nature and the other highly specific -- so you can get the exact sound you want. I cannot comment on the FM radio or voice recorder features because I have no use for them. I like the design of the unit although I didn't expect it to be rounded on the back (it's about the size and shape of a D battery but weighs less). It's more the color of a violet red crayon than pictured. It is, so far, durable (but I handle it with care because I can't afford to treat it as something that is disposable). And although there is a learning curve, I haven't had any major difficulty setting it up or operating it. I really didn't expect to be so impressed with the gadget, which is why I'm giving it a five-star rating.
