Wait till the warranty wears off!

Strengths: I have no complaints on how it worked. For the short time that I owned it, it did exactly what it was advertised to do. Burned virtually every brand name media, even the lowest in quality.

Weakness: Wait till warranty expires, then you're in for a big surprise!

I could never recommend this company, or any of its products to anybody. I had my unit for just over a year, when it decided to take a crap. What they don't tell you is, after the warranty expires you're absolutely left in the cold. In other words, there's no way to repair or replace a defective unit! For this kind of money, this is absolutely ludicrous! To those contemplating purchasing anything that this company has to offer, will be a fool with their money. Until Plextor has a better repair policy, becomes more customer friendly, I'm recommending to everyone that I know stay away from this crap! This unit is now been the most expensive item and computer hardware that I've purchased, that I've just had to plain throwaway. Buyer beware with this company!

Good. Not Great.

Strengths: Attractive, fast, good quality, relatively portable.

Weakness: Not as reliable as I thought a Plextor drive would be.

This is a nice-looking unit with DVD RW and CD RW capabilities. I have gotten faster performance by using the included FireWire cable, which incidentally frees up a USB port. It works lying flat or standing on its side in the included holder. I have been able to install the software on multiple computers, enabling me to use this one drive to back them up and swap data between them. I have only begun using the FireWire connection, so I cannot say how it will turn out in the long run. Using the USB connection, I burned a few coasters, but really not bad at all. There are two significant drawbacks: (1) I have had some discs complete and verify just fine -- and then it turns out that I cannot read their data in this drive. I had to use other machines to read them. In one case, I had to try a half-dozen other DVD drives before finding one that would read the disc this unit had burned. That was scary; it was data I could not replace. (2) There is something funky about the relationship between this unit and Windows XP. Nine times out of ten, it is just fine. But once in a while I cannot get Windows to see this drive. Plextor told me to use the reset button, and that worked once, but it hasn't worked since then. I have had to reboot and try again.

Strengths: Set-up a breeze! Excellent documentation. Easy to use.

Weakness: None found so far--don't really expect any.

I chose this Plextor DVD writer not only for its excellent reviews in the magazines, but because of my previous positive experience with the internal Plextor CD-RW in my computer. Since getting this 708UF model, I have banged out over 30 DVDs without a hitch! S-M-O-O-T-H is the best
way to describe its operation!

Strengths: Fast and easy to use.

Weakness: Won't work with USB 1.1

The unit was listed as coming with Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 but it was only the basic version. The cost to upgrade to 6 is the same as buying it. The fact that it won't work with USB 1.1 is a downer too as none of my PC's have 2.0 . The Firewire works great but the jack on my laptop for it is on the side which gets in the way of my trackball and my hand.

Strengths: Fast, solid and it burns every time.

Weakness: price, software

My first DVD dual format 8X. Wow, what speed. I was amazed.
The Plextor is very fast. I could burn my dvds 4.7 GB in less than 8 min (took around 13 min to read).
The software included in the package is so so,
I've used it with DVDXCopy Pl to make DVD backups and it works great. No coasters and no problems. Installation was a snap.
Try both interfaces 1394/Hi-speed USB and pleased with it. I am very satisfied with the Plextor drive so far and highly recommned it.

Strengths: quality

First class quality. Installation was quick and easy. The bundled software of Roxio easy cd & dvd creator 6 is a nice addition and is straight forward to use.

Strengths: Dual USB 2.0 or 1394 interfaces with both cables included. Flexible horizaontal or vertical moutning options. Nice burning software package included. Good burning speeds.

Weakness: Nothing to mention here.

I have been very pleased with this drive so far. The USB 2.0 interface works great and the flexibility of mounting the drive either vertically or horizontally has made it easy to find a spot for it on my desk. I haven't had any problems with the drive and would recommend it to others.

Strengths: fast!!!! attracive design, installs easily, lots of software

Works great, it's fairily quiet. It operates as advertised. Plextor has good reputation for quality and this drive proves it. They are top of the line.
The only complaint i have is that the usb cable seems loose - but i had no problem with it.

Plextor delivers on its reputation with this product. Firewire or USB support.

Although the included software is adequate, I wish Plextor would make a deal with Nero, so we could have the best software included with the best hardware.

Weakness: A little expensive at the moment

This is my first DVD burner, and I really like it. It's very portable and fast. I would recommend it to all my friends!! This is one of the BEST.

I choose Plextor since Plextor has been know for good quality burner. The installation is fast and easy. I have using the 708UF for 2 weeks. So far it works perfect for me. It is fast and quiet. Once again Plextor deliver its reputation of quality product.

Strengths: Easy to use. Plug in and start burning.

Weakness: Isn't recognized in iTunes as a burner.

The ease of use of the Plextor PX-708UF is remarkable. All I had to do was plug it into my firewire port, open up Toast Titanium and it was recognized. Started burning right off the bat with no problems. I was dissapointed that I was unable to burn a CD through iTunes but haven't investigated this situation much. Main reason for my use was burning DVDs, and it does just that!!!
