ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: After an easy installation, card performed to my satisfaction. Good value for money, about 50 dollars cheaper than Nvidias best equivalent video card. Exellent graphics and texturing of bitmaps.

Weakness: The installation manual does not specify if your motherboard has a GART driver already you do not have to change it, ie. put a new GART driver in it. I was not able to connect to Ali to update.

This is my second video card to date. The first was Nvidia Ge Force 2 MX400, (mediocre performance compared to the 9600 XT), this one (9600 XT) absolutely pleased me to the hilt. Every game I have played it on has had double the quality of my first Nvidia card and the frame rates were also about double. Good job by ATI. I cant wait for the CATALYST 3.9 drivers to come out in November so I can try the overclock which can boost the core up to 527 MHz. Looks like my buying Nvidia products has come to an end! I highly reccomend this card for anyone on a budget below 200 dollars looking for a great value and superior performance.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Multi monitor support, excellent 3D gaming performance for the price.

ATI RADEON 9600XT is an evolutionary wonder that makes an excellent multimedia graphics card providing a wide range of features.

3D gaming performance is very good as the card is based on the Radeon 9600 Pro but with a higher memory clock. Video captures were straightforward and very clean.

For gamers on a tighter budget, the RADEON 9600 XT offers the best value. This is the highest-performance graphics card there is for under $200. The quad-pipeline design has a 128-bit memory interface and 128MB of DDR onboard. This card features the VGA, DVI, and video-out interfaces. You won't be the least bit disappointed when you fire up the latest DirectX 9 games.

Weakness: None that I can think of...

Awesome video card. Great perfromance. Superb driver support for basically any game. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a high quality video card that's under $200 and performs close to a high-end card.

Built by ATI vs Powered by ATI

Strengths: Great Card, Great Graphics, Many Resolution Options, Great for Games.

Weakness: Confusing between "Built by ATI" and "Powered by ATI"

Theres are basically 2 types of ATI Radeon Video Cards. On the box the item will either say:

1. There's a "Built by ATI". Which means that the Video Card has all ATI parts and was put together by ATI. This card is covered under the ATI warranty. So for any problems you would contact ATI. The "Built by ATI" Video card is the ATI Radeon 9600 XT, 128 MB, etc, etc...

2. There's a "Powered by ATI". Which means that the Video Card uses all ATI parts but was not put together by ATI, it was put together by a different company. "Powered by ATI would be considered "OEM". The warranty on this card usually belongs to the company that put the card together. This "Powered by ATI" card has the regular, ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB, BUT also has the upgrade ATI Radeon 9600 XT, 256 MB. So it has double the memory.

After jumping back and forth between the 2, whether to pick an original "built by ATI" of have double the memory, I went with the "built by ATI". I did my own research to see if there was a real different in the performance of having double the memory. Then compaired it to having the peace of mind that the Video Card was put together by the people who actually make the parts for the video card.

From my reserach, and what I needed the card for, I felt the 256 MB would make no difference than the 128 MB, and since I found both items for similar prices, I went with "Built by ATI".

Look for me on WoW, my name is: DJ Deception

Great review. Most gaming geeks prefer "Built by ATI" so that was a good choice.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Good card for the money.

Weakness: Does not properly recognize mmx architecture, direct x components.

Even though this card does not recognize the above mentioned issues it has performed very well. It is one of the few good cards you can buy that does not require a separate power wire or a 300 watt power supply. ATI's tech support leaves a lot to be desired. When you email them with the problems they send a list to go over. After going over the list and emailing them back while experiencing the same problems they emailed the same checklist back to me. Also they do not have a toll free number for teck support.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Not only is this the nicest looking card out of the box, it makes my display breathtaking. I could only say WOW! Half Life2 is a mega bonus! Installation was easy, and ATI support site excellent.

Weakness: I have to wait for Half Life2 and my MB is only 4XAGP!

I thought that getting a Sony Wega 34" widescreen TV for Xbox and PS2 was going to take me to the top, but having the 9600XT showed me there are a few more rungs on the ladder. This is truly an exceptional card for the money!

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: price, performance, drivers

Weakness: none

I did a lot of research on cards when I built my latest computer and this is definitely the best card you can get for the price. Great performance on every game I own and it barely gets hot even after overclocking. Free HL2 also, you can't go wrong.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Easy to install, this XT Model outperforms the ATI RADEON 9600 PRO. Comparing XT to Pro model, Engine Clock Speed:500 to 400 mHz, Pixel FillRate 2.0 to 1.6 Gpixel/sec, both same affordable price.

Weakness: It does not come with 256 MB DDR Frame Buffer.

I upgraded my video card from MAD DOG Ge-Force 4 MX440, 64 MB to the ATI Radeon XT. I install this card in the Dell Server Poweredge 400 SC, Pentium 4 2.4 GHz machine, with only 256 MB Ram. The lightning speed of the 9600 XT absolutely magnificent for video game lovers, the video movement smooth and responsive to manuevering commands. The price slightly higher by $20-$30 with the Pro. Note also, the card cooling fan has self-fed power from the circuit board, and no power cable attached to it. Do not compromise with other generic brands which cost the same as ATI cards. Guarantee satisfaction, after all it cost less then $200. GO FOR IT!

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: I love this card! 8x AGP 128mb, fast clock speeds, nice price

Weakness: color management is not easy to adjust.

Great card for the money! FPS speeds doubled. I upgraded from a G3 ti200. Picture clarity is great! Games run so much smoother now. Why pay 400 when 200 will get you so close. I highly recommend. A friend went with the Nvidia 5700ultra and it cant keep up with mine on DX9 games.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Wonderful graphics speed for the money 1280 X 1024 75Hz NWN full acceleration!!!

Weakness: Drivers out of the box need upgrading, Settings need to be change to prevent game hangup

the only weakness I have found it setup requires some tweaking. I needed to download latest drivers and search the Google database for settings to prevent game hang up with Never Winter Nights (NWN). The game has only hung up on me one other time since making the driver and setup changes. The card is much, much, much faster than a PNY nVidia 5200 that I just returned. If you can't afford this card wait until you can. I am playing NWN 1280 X 1024 75 Hz with the absolute maximum video settings and it plays very nice. It is worth every penny spent. five stars for out of the box driver issues and change settings to prevent game hang ups

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: Excellent performance, multimonitor support.

Weakness: Drivers in the box are out of date.

Works perfectly with two monitors, 3D performance is outstanding for $170.00 card. Cooling fan is very quiet and need no power cable. Most likely it is the best card on the market, which priced less than $200.00. Highly recommend.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: This graphics card is absolutely amazing. The Graphics are stunning and who can beat getting a copy of Half-Life 2 for free. For the price this is the best card in its range.

Weakness: The price is still a little high for me, but it is still an awesome card.

The graphics that this card delivers are as good as I have seen on any system. They blow away a Playstation or XBox, and I have not seen another graphics card that paralleled its excellence. It renders so smooth and lifelike that It almost starts to look real. Very good card for the money.

ATI RADEON 9600 XT Graphics Card

Strengths: A fantastic card with great performance for the money. Definitely one of the best mid-range cards on the market.

Weakness: Nothing to mention here.

Installation of the card was a breeze and the drivers have been rock-solid for me since installing the card. No glitches or any problems seen so far. Performance has been great and I have been completely satisfied with this card purchase. Definitely a lot of bang-for-the-buck.

Acceptable But Not Great

Strengths: It works OK.

Weakness: Hassles, poor help, sketchy performance.

I used this card for about a year. Here are some random notes I collected along the way.

Without asking my permission, on installation, they replaced my file assignments from Windows Media Player to the ATI media player. I didn't like its looks and I didn't want to use it. I had to go in and manually change things back so that my media would play in WMP, like before.

Also, on installation, they installed a link to the Catalyst Control Center at the top of the Windows Explorer file menu without asking me. So from then on, I could no longer use my customary fast way of creating a new folder by just hitting Enter a couple of times in a row (that being the default setting); instead, I had to mouse around to avoid the Catalyst Control Center option.

Installation was generally a hassle. They installed software for Windows XP that was not actually compatible with Windows XP. After installing, I got an error message indicating that my ATI Radeon was not detected, even though the device was listed OK in Device Manager.

I found the Help file to be awful. I remember that Treeview Pane was not even mentioned in the index or glossary -- nor even in the company's online knowledgebase! Stretch Desktop was totally unexplained. For these and other things, I had to do a lot of hunting around to get basic explanations of functionality.

It didn't come with a DVI adapter, so I had to buy one separately. Some cards do include that, which saves hassle and expense.

Once I got the thing working, it performed OK, but ultimately my system's inability to handle graphics well (when I was running multiple programs) -- which I think was the job of the video card -- provoked me to upgrade to a different system. Anyway, AGP is past its time now.

Good but not good enough

Strengths: It works once you install & update it.

Weakness: It doesn't work right away after you put it in the AGP. Also It doesn't work with Need For Speed: Carbon

All right here are my four reasons for buying or not to buy this video card.

1. It works very well.

2. It works with any of the games that I own like Need for speed: Underground, Need for speed: Underground 2, Need for speed: Most Wanted. Also it works with Need for speed: Carbon most of the time. The card has a few features like a SMARTGART, VPU recover & OVERDRIVE. Now here are the two for not buying this card.

3. Install the card is a PAIN when I install the video card it didn’t work for an hour or two.

4. When the Windows XP pick up the card it said that it didn’t pass windows XP standards since I have a dimension 4400 that runs on 1.80 GHz at 1.79 GHz, also it was because of the updates Windows XP it been getting. When it comes down to next generation games it kinda falls short. When I was playing need for speed: Carbon yesterday after I disable the last police car I went into cooldown mode. After was cooldown complete it was suppose to go back to the series challenge menu but it didn’t the game shut down on me. Other than that it’s a great video card, just make sure that you update the card when you need to.
