Good drive over all!

Strengths: Quiet, big size, warranty can not be beat!

Weakness: Price still too high!

I bought 2 for my file server and they work great. Quiet enough for turn the computer on overnight. The drive is a little hot but as long as you have good air flow you are fine. If the price under $180 then it will be 5 stars for sure. Very happy.

Outstanding and Reliable Drive...

Strengths: Huge capacity, inexpensive per gigabyte, 5 year warranty

Weakness: None

This is probably my 6th seagate drive in the last few years and they have all been incredible workhorses. None of my Seagate drives has failed yet as opposed to a Western Digital which died after a year of use.

Seagate has an unprecedented 5 year warranty on all their drives, so it's a no brainer when it comes to reliability. This drive is huge, only outdone by its newer sibling, the 750GB; that drive is over $450-$500, so if you do the math, you can buy 2 of these puppies for the price of one of those...mmmm 1TB of storage!

Be aware that once you format this drive, it's really 465GB--that's because 1024 meg = 1 gig, but hard drive companies round it down. So don't complain when you don't get the full blown 500GB.

Anywhoo, this is an excellent drive--quiet, fast and affordable. Highly Recommended

Great Capacity, but at a cost!

Strengths: Great all-in-one capacity hard drive; quiet; five-year warranty

Weakness: Expensive!! ; only 8mb cache; no retail kit

I have been a Seagate fan for about six-months now, previously using Western Digital. I have had one RMA with a Seagate drive, and it was fairly painless. In less than two weeks, they sent me a 400GB drive as a replacement for my 300GB drive! Unnecessarily complex warranty support web-site, but it does what it needs to do. I just love the fact that they have a 5-year warranty! Indicates to me that they stand behind their product.

I use this for external storage of MP3s that I have ripped, so speed is not really an issue. There is a version out there that has a 16mb cache, but have not seen a need for it. Honestly, I am not pushing the performance envelope, so I wouldn't notice these things. Perhaps if it was your main C: drive, this might make sense.

This sits in an external enclosure, attached to a Buffalo Network Attached Storage device. I am able to host & stream my MP3 throughout the house! I needed a really large drive because my CD library is close to 2500 CDs, so when ripped at a high-quality bit-rate, that takes up alot of storage! Note that the cost per GB is considerably more for this drive than a 300GB drive. Heck, you could get two 300GB drive for a 600GB total for less than this single drive! But for my application, I needed everything on one, so I had no choice. Keep this in mind if you don't "really" need a single drive solution, because you could save some money.

The drive itself is fairly quiet. It sits right next to my desk in an external enclosure, and you'd harly know that it was on.

Due to the cost of this drive per GB, and because it does not come with a retail kit (though you can buy this elsewhere under a different Part Number) or a 8MB cache, I'm only giving it four stars.
