Not recommended

Strengths: OK to install

Weakness: Video quality, lack of support

After installing, I found the software very limited with virtually no help included and KWORLD help doesn't exist. I saw jumpy video in several different modes including MPEG and MPEG2. The image quality was not very high quality, and the editing capabilities were not well programmed and left much to be desired. I would buy another product.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Hardware MPEG2 encoding, No external power needed

Weakness: Poor Software, can not watch image in capture screen if it is coming form a video player on visible fast forward, can not control hardware directly from Nero, no MAC drivers

I purchased a KWorld Xpert DVD Maker as a replacement/upgrade to the Dazzle Digital Video Creator that I had for three years. My primary use for both devices is encoding from video tape.

The Hardware for the KWorld product is better - not only for the obvious reason that it can encode MPEG2 instead of just MPEG1, but also because it does not need any external power supply. There are only two negative things that might be hardware related. One is the inability of the KWorld product to show video in fast forward. If a VCR connected to the product is put into play and then fast forward, the image on the screen freezes. This makes it difficult to find specific scenes that you want to capture. The other is being unable to control the hardware directly from Nero (the image does not come in correct). This forces you to use the bundled software at least for video capture.

You also can not use the hardware with a MAC. I have seen this with a lot of USB 2.0 devices. The interface is the same on the PC & the MAC, why not make the second driver so that the 10% of the wired world who don't use a PC (like my wife) could also use the product?

Unfortunately, the software that comes with the KWorld product, PVR-Plus, is nowhere near as good as the software that came with the Dazzle product.

The first problem is with the settings tab in the capture mode. Once you find the tab, (it is not obvious), you discover that you have to convert your recording time into SECONDS. Can you convert 1 hour 20 minutes into seconds in your head? There was no reason not to make the input HH:MM:SS or MM:SS.

The next problem is naming the file. You enter the file name halfway down the options list. If you don't change the name, it will record over the previous file you made - no warning.

If you are planning to make a DVD, you now encounter the next problem. Where the Dazzle software had a drop down that let you choose what your final output form was going to be and then set all the necessary values (such as frame rate & audio frequency), there is no such option in the KWorld software. This would not be so bad if the options for each setting included a note about what standard they match, but they do not. In fact, I have been unable to find an audio setting that correctly matches the DVD standard in the options.

The reason that I know there is not an audio option that matches the DVD standard leads us to the next problem: You can not use the built in DVD burner to burn the file you just captured because it bawks at the audio not being at the DVD standard rate - no matter what audio setting you use when you capture the video!

Trying to avoid the bother of timing and calculating the number of seconds in a video clip, I discovered the next problem: If you manually stop a recording before the timer has expired, a valid MPG file is not made - only an MPG stream file. This is important since DVD authoring programs such as Nero or DVDAuthor will not accept MPG stream files.

The way around this last problem is to use the bundled video editor that comes with the KWorld product. Unlike the Dazzle editing software which used the hardware encoder to recompile the edited video, the KWorld software uses a very inefficient software encoder. The result is a slow process and a larger final file size. The editor is also difficult to use. The Dazzle editor used colored bands to show where a video was cut, the KWorld editor does not. You have to write down where you make breaks or you will end up deleting the wrong portions of the film.

I like the KWorld hardware and I am satisfied with the price. However, I am severely disappointed with the bundled software. If you need low cost, portable hardware, this product is for you. Just accept that you will need to put a little extra effort into producing your final product.

KWorld Xpert DVD Maker USB 2.0 (Technical and REBATE)

Strengths: I find it easy to use and a good value. All of our Tapes have now been converted to DVDs.

Weakness: For the price to value rating, this tool does the job. If you want something more sophisticated it will simply cost more.

I've two comments. First, I believe that this tool and its interface are pretty intuitive and reliable. It would have cost a couple of hundred to have a commercial service do the tape to DVD conversion. Given the low price with rebate I wondered if I would have to return it. I was quite happy with the end result.

Second AND MOST IMPORTANT: SCRUTINIZE any rebate offers from this company. I bought the unit and was given a REBATE RECEIPT to submit with the form. After THREE Months I did a followup as I'd not gotten the check or any message. Here is the message I received in response.

Dear Customer,
Thanks for the e-mail, unfortunately we could not honor your rebate due to the reason(s):

You did not enclose original or copy of invoice.(Rebate Receipt is not considered acceptable invoice.)

As we have specified on the rebate form with your signature required that we “do not accept resubmission of this rebate request.”

Rebate Center

They may be OK from a legal perspective, but this is a clear indication that the company is ethically challenged. The industry trains customers to use the rebate receipts. Any company that waits for a customer followup and gives a response like that message makes you wonder about its tactical approach to making money.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Very easy to use and provides quality output. Although I do not have a DVD burner (yet) I use it to make VCD's. Provides one button capture from VCR and editing is easy.

Weakness: Would not recognize media in my cd burner until I upgraded the software at the web site. After upgrade it worked flawlessly

I had an older unit that would not work with WinXP and needed an upgrade. This unit is compact, easy to use and delivers good quality output. I burn VCD's on my cd-rom for play in my DVD player and this unit is just the ticket for easy transfer of VCR tapes. With its direct burn to DVD it makes me want to purchase a DVD burner! I had to use the USB update provided with the software and had no trouble with it at all. My CD-R/RW would not recognize media at first, but the company had an upgraded version on their web site that solved the problem. All in all, for ease of use and quality of output, I would have to say they have a winner here.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Easy to use, easy hook up.

Weakness: PVR Plus software is pretty weak. Doesn't really work that well an doesn't have many features for editing. Makes editing cumbersome.

I really like this product. Was a little skeptical at first but found this product to be easy to use and worked out great transferring my old Hi8 video onto my computer and onto DVD disk. I have gone through practically my entire library of Hi8 tapes and converted them and the quality was pretty good too. The PVR Plus software that comes with it didn't worked well for me. It was very cumbersome to use and didn't have many features. However, the Power Producer Gold2 software did the trick. And, you can buy a better software off the shelf if you like. All in all a great product. I would buy again.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: easy to set up, price, don't have to crack open your computer to insert a pci card

Weakness: software is really bad, instructions are non existant

Got it home and hooked it up and it didn't work, software keeps wanting me to upgrade my usb port but mine are 2.0 and my system is brand new. I finally got sick of it and deleted all of the software it came with. I hope you have windows xp went in to windows movie maker and was able to upload from my antiquated vhs c camcorder. I would highly recommend you have 2.0 usb ports before you start, and have some kind of software that will let you capture the video and manipulate it. Don't depend on the software it comes with it was more of a headache than a help. But the product itself seems to do the job, I would recommend for somebody like me who has a old camcorder without a usb or fire wire port.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: This product is really worth the money. It is easy to install and the software that came together make easy to record any image/audio source (TV, VCR, Digital or Analogical video camera.)

Weakness: When installing on Windows XP, you will probably get a message that the software "has no digital signature", however you should choose the option "install anyway"

I would recommend anyone to buy this product for four reasons: First, it easy to connect on the computer and on the video source. Second, the quality of the image it is really good (DVD quality). Third, the price is three times cheaper than the same type of device from other companies. And finally, it is small and light enough for you carry together with a laptop and use your laptop as a portable TV.

This product is not that good

Weakness: Not easy to hook up, not easy to install software

I bought this product after reading all reviews. But I was not successful when I tried to install it the first time.
First, the hardware is not easy to hook up. The S-video and video/audio connectors are all female, the connectors
on my camcorder are also female. I need to find other cables to connect them.
Second, it requires to upgrade USB port driver. I have a P4 3GHz computer (only 8 months old) that has USB 2.0 ports (Windows XP home edition). But it still requires to upgrade. After I did the installation of the driver, it messed up the USB ports. Now my keyboard is not working (which is connected to one of the USB ports). And the software is not working either. I spent about 3 hours to try different things, but still no luck.
Today, I went back to see other people's reviews again. Somebody did mentioned that it messed up his/her Windows XP, but unfortunately, no solution was mentioned.
I will try to spend more time to make it work, otherwise I will return it.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Very convenient to store Home Videos.

Weakness: Not any.

Very good product to store the home videos. Burning software received with the product was very good. Only thing is S-video cable supplied has female interface, ideally it should have been a male interface as most of the devices have female S-video connections.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Make sure when purhasing any product you completely read all of the information in the decription of the product. But in this case it did not inform you that you must have a pentium 4 or better for the product to work. I have been unable to use the product since my computer does not have a pentium 4 or better. It is very disappointing. It does have this information on the box in small letters. I think is should be the first thing you read about the product.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Easy to hook up, price is great. Pretty easy install over all. I didn't need to update anything.

Weakness: I got the same "digital" error message and installed anyway without a problem. Note added 8-13-4: You HAVE to have USB 2.0 for the picture quality to be good.

Also instructions seem translated from a language other than English but if you know a little about computers, you'll be ok. A great product for the price.

Note added 8-13-4: I discovered my picture quality problem to be because my computer has generic USB 1.1, not 2.0. I just purchased a 2.0 card so hope that fixes it. But the K-worlds' V-stream card insert comes with the same cables and transfers at 2.0 so would eliminate the need to upgrade your USB, and it's only around 20 bucks complete! I was trying to avoid installing an internal card in the first place. Oh well.

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: Easy setup, intuitive software bundle

Weakness: none yet

This is a very good piece of hardware. For its price, I am surprised how good it is. The setup was quick: only needed to upgrade the USB driver and install the PVR software it came with. If you want better quality of svaed file, use ATI theater200 or other capture ware. But all said, I am very very impressed with this little gadget. I was a little apprehensive when buying it, but now I feel quite satisfied. Make sure you have a powerful pentium 4 system; I hooked this to Toshiba P25-S509 notebook. With setellite TV, I am enthralled at the quality of captured files!

Kworld VS-USB2800 Video Editing Device

Strengths: portable, easy to use, usb interface

Weakness: needs to upgrade USB driver

I am new to video capture. This one does the work I want - convert the old VHS to VCD. I haven't tried DVD format yet. It works well with my laptop - capture, burning. The USB interface and portable small piece makes it easy to use on different PCs, but I had a minor issue with my desktop. I was not able to upgrade the USB driver. It is a XP with P4. Got the warning message mentioned in previous comments. Overall, I am satisified with it.

Kworld Xpert dvd Maker usb2.0

Strengths: None: the hardware has incompatable female sockets so purchasing male connectors is necessary, keep these as short as possiable if you want to keep picture quality.

Weakness: to many to list, firstly the box says AV compatable this is not correct, secondly the so called high resolution is rubbish when the final dvd is screened on a 42inch plasma tv.

The box says its great the software is rubbish and the final video to dvd product is also rubbish it's going back to the shop.

Simple solution but better ones exist

Strengths: Easy to install; not very expensive

Weakness: Should have male (not female) connectors; confusing software package

I only have a few items that I wanted to move from VHS to DVD, so I didn't want to spend a lot on a capture device. This particular device is easy to install and very compact. I would recommend if you only plan to use it on occasion. If you have a lot of things to capture, I would suggest another solution with a better software package.
