stay away

Strengths: what good is a power supply if it can't last a week?

Weakness: short lifespan

Everything works fine and I am using 512MB memory with 250GB drive and an AMD Sempron for Windows. Yes, I know my system is very outdated but doesn't that make it easier on the power requirements? yet somehow this unit failed me shortly after first usage. Buyers beware. Stay away.

Worked for three weeks

Strengths: Quiet

Weakness: Died after 3 weeks.

It was cheap, but why to pay anything for this? Support is awfull, it didn't responce for my e-mail requesting RMA.
Web site has no Support or Warranty links.

Not so good

Strengths: None

Weakness: Poorly built, voltage is up and down

Power (voltage) is all over the place, causing my PC to shut down automatically. Also put one in my sons Computer the same day and power to RAM fluxuates so much it ruined 2 gigs of Crucial DDR.

So so product

Strengths: Cheap

Weakness: low quality, after I installed it two week, the PSU is dead!

I purchased this unit for my old computer. It works. But after a while, the fan in the unit has loud noise. Usually I do not shut down the system during the night, but with this unit I have to turn off the computer each night before I went to bed.

Inexpensive Power Supply

Strengths: Inexpensive

Weakness: Low Quality

I have bought this power supply free after rebates and it works. I have been experiencing some random failures in my new computer, which seems to be related to the power supply. I will probably replace this unit for something better.

I guess you have what you pay for...

Hi there,

Thanks for that review. I think I'll replace mine now... should've read up on these reviews earlier!

I bought the Coolmax because it was so cheap. I upgraded my system with a SLI card (Geforce7600GT) and ran into problems; while playing FSX it started crashing with memory errors. Later, just browsing the internet, the system started to misbehave and it booted spontaneously. I suspected memory at first but after running a long test that seems to be OK. Judging from your review and the other ones here, I think I should return this power supply - it just doesn't supply the power I hoped it would!

Thanks!

COOLMAX V500 500W Power Supply

Strengths: Cheap, ATX form factor, 120mm fan, SATA support, 20/24 pin connector, reasonably quiet, works

Weakness: Extraordinarily tedious rebate

I purchased this PS recently from a popular website for FAR with the intent of using it in a low-cost system build. Aside from the price, I was attracted to the ATX FF and felt that the variety of connectors offered me enough flexibility to use it with a number of different components and have some upgrade capability for future enhancements.

It fits in my ultra case (also FAR) and is compatible with a cheap mobo/cpu combo I purchased separately. Operationally, it works just fine, and I have found that the 120mm fan is relatively quiet as well.

I see no weaknesses with the product so far, however, the rebate requirements for this product are extraordinarily difficult and do cause me some concern (I have not yet received my rebate for this product). The manufacturer handles the rebates themselves. They require the buyer to register their rebate online and obtain a registration number prior to mailing in the rebate. The number must be entered on the rebate form. They also require a self-addressed stamped envelope (with the registration # written on the envelope). If you think postal rates will be going up in the next 10 weeks, you need to consider this and include extra postage on your SASE. They also require the buyer to sign and date the form, and cut a pre-printed mailing label out of the form and use it for the address of their submission envelope. As unbelievable as it sounds, people have been rejected for not signing the form and for handwriting the address instead of using the pre-printed label. They do not accept submissions via certified mail, so there is no way to prove they ever received it. And lastly, they do not accept resubmissions. Its probably the most stringent rebate I have ever had to deal.

I would recommend this supply to those who can follow the rebate instructions very carefully and get their rebate. For those who do not get the rebate, the pre-rebate price of $28 is too expensive and I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Others would prefer reading your product review than your multiple-line report of rebate hassles that you have dealt with Coolmax.

I provided this information because I consider price as part of the product review, and I consider a rebate as part of the price. I hope you can see this connection.

Many people are being denied their rebates for not following the directions exactly. As I said in my review, I would not recommend this product if you cannot follow the rebate instructions carefully.

I would think that "others" would be concerned if there is a problematic rebate associated with a product, and a chance that they would be paying more than they had planned for a product regardless of its quality and features.

$0 after rebate

Strengths: free after rebate, has 120mm fan inside

Weakness: unreliable, underperforming, no pfc

Well, I got this COOLMAX V500 500W Power Supply on sale and only because it was free after mail in rebate of $28. This power supply is VERY light - and that does say a lot about its quality. It has no pfc, many people reported it blowing up or simply stopping working after couple of months. The fan is loud contrary to what the description says. Its best characteristic is that it does have a 120mm fan that could be scavenged, undervolted and used somewhere else. For the price I paid I am satisfied and gave it 3 stars - but only because its cost was 0.

Good product, I don't see why there are so many...

Strengths: Cost, Brand

Weakness: Its a low cost power supply

You do get what you pay for, if you need a high end power supply don't get this one. If you want a cheap reasonable power supply its a great buy.

choose another

Strengths: Cool Max makes decent power supplies in the $40 ~ $50 range. But not this one.

Weakness: failed right after I upgraded my computer with 7900GTS.

Worked alright about 2 days or so until my new video card arrived. Once i replaced my good old 7600GS to 7900GTS the system ran fine for about couple of hours....and it shut down!!! Buyers beware. This is recommended only if you are using for old systems. If you are building new computer then choose another power supply.

not recommended

Strengths: nice package

Weakness: short lifespan & poor customer service.

Maybe i am just one of the unlucky ones to receive a DOA unit but CoolMax won't reply my emails or phone calls. 0 for product quality and 0 for customer service. Judging from other customer's rebate experience, there's something shady going on with this company. I hope I can still return this to Mwave...

average power supply

Strengths: decent price for this kind of power supply

Weakness: short life span, packaging could be better

Ordered mine from Mwave. Works just fine, but first impressions were not that great. Fan gets noisy after a while and I suspect the power supply was working too hard. Yep i was right. It gave up on me after only 4 days of use with 7900GS and a Pentium D 820 which i consider mid-range system. Good thing it did not take my other components with it. Take your money elsewhere and buy a more expensive power.

Great price on good PS

Strengths: 500W, SATA connectors, 24pin main power, 120mm fan

Weakness: none

Free after rebates. Dual 12v rails which seem to be quite stable, quiet 120mm fan for good air flow. No issues with installing and running this in one my gaming systems.

worked but did not last

Strengths: It's cheap

Weakness: It's cheap

The power supply worked, but only lasted less than 3 months. Yestoday it stopped working. The good news is it did not burn my motherboard or hard drives. I don't know if I just had bad luck for such a short life span of the unit, but the unit did not give me a solid impression.

a cheap 500W power supply

Strengths: price

Weakness: unstable

This is one of the cheapest 500W power supplies you can get. One advantage is that it supports SATA. The noise of the power supply is bearable if considering the price. Talking about the disadvantage, the power supply may shut off the system randomly. Therefore, it is only a good 500W power supply for a backup machine without critical data.

Good, solid power supply

Strengths: SATA support, cheap

Weakness: Not for those building a top-notch system

I bought this because I needed a basic power supply for a box I was putting together for my daughter. No magic bells and whistles and it does the job. I wouldn't use it for a machine I was putting together for myself, but it works great for its purpose -- plus it's cheap. Recommended as long as you know what you need.

very nice basic PSU

Strengths: quiet seems reliable

Weakness: not SLI-ready

If you need to replace a power supply on a regular old desktop or server, this will do it. If you have the latest and greatest SLI-ready rig and you want a super-hot PSU, this is probably not the right one.

PSU for low end computers only

Strengths: CHEAP

Weakness: CHEAP

yes, we all got this free, or close to free. And there's a reason for it. I would only trust this in a basic, low end computer only. The reviewer that mentioned the wattage to be closer to 300 watts is right on. That is about how much faith I put in it. Mine is running an "old" AMD XP2100 system with a couple of hard drives and a DVD burner. Running okay, but I would definitely cheap out on a recent generation build. OCZ, Corsair, Thermaltake, and Antec all make good power supplies but you do pay quite a bit more.

PSU Micro ATX or Mini-ATX

Strengths: Low price, simple cables, 120mm fan

Weakness: Short cables, only one SATA outlet

This PSU would be good for Micro ATX or Mini-ATX with lower power requirements. It is not for larger Mid-Tower or Full-Tower because of shorter cables. This PSU is on the lighter side, meaning it should not be used under heavy use. The 120mm fan is quieter than 80mm or 90mm.

Coolmax V-500 500W 120mm Silent Fan Power Supply

Strengths: Very large 120mm fan, SATA 150 connector, convertable 24 pin or 20 pin main power connector, supports Intel Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon, attractive packaging, sometimes offered Free After Rebate.

Weakness: Very lightweight and cheap appearance; made in China - improper grammar on box, mine was not bad, but have read several other reviews of these being bad right out of the box and damaging motherboards

Most will buy this PSU because it is FAR. The rebate is a hassle though, requiring pre-registration online, a self addressed stamped envelope, a special address label, and will be rejected if any errors are made. From the rebate form:

"Failure to submit any of the requested documentation will prevent the rebate issuance and reject automatically"

"Envelopes without a proper label may not be delivered and processed."

A very inexpensive power supply

Strengths: Inexpensive, well actually free after rebate

Weakness: Very light, not too many connectors, under power

I got this so-called 500W power supply because it's free after rebate. It's rated 500W per manufacturer, but it's under powered. I would say more like 300W. The fan is slightly noisy. Overall it's OK to use to build kids' PC or 2nd PC.

I've been using it for about 30 days on my 2nd PC now. It performs without any problems. A couple of the Y-connectors were added to supplement the lack of connectors. The 120mm fan is included in this power supply, which is a plus.

Cheap good working power supply

Strengths: Unbeatable price!!! Nice 120mm fan w/ all the connectors I need, nothing to complaint. Also, the connectors are speical for easy plug and unplug

Weakness: Very light in weight The fan noise is significant. The level of fan noise would be quite acceptable.

Coolmax product is generally OK except their quality control appears poor. If you get a good one, it works great. If you are looking for a acceptable cheap power supply, this is the one

Great price for a decent power supply

Strengths: Very cheap. Quiet

Weakness: Light, not many connections

I got this Free after rebate, so it's probably one of the best power supplies you can get for the price. I've been using it since it arrived in December and so far it has been pretty good. I didn't put it in a high end system since it's pretty light so I didn't want to take the risk. However it performs as said. It's quiet and I haven't had any complaints so far.
This thing doesn't have many connections so it's not really good if you have a high end video card that needs a 12v connection since it doesn't even have one.

I'd suggest getting it if it's your cheapest option and if you're putting together an old machine.

Coolmax V-500 is OK

Strengths: Cheap

Weakness: Cheap, not silent

Well, you can not beat free after rebate. It's very light so it's probably not very reliable. I would not use this in a primary computer, but in a second computer. Stick with a better brand if you have $30 to spend.
