Pretty Cool

Strengths: Compact size, short lag time between shots, face recognition, multiple shoot modes, price, no more AA batteries

Weakness: Could have a stronger flash, more plastic parts than metal(not a problem yet)

I was upgrading from an Olympus 2.1 megapixel from 2001 so anything was sure to be an improvement. It's nice to see that digital cameras have come a long way. I am an average picture taker who has a wife and 2 kids (5 and 1), and take mostly family pictures whether it be outside or inside. This thing is light and compact. The battery life has not been a problem and there are many modes to choose from. The LCD screen is a decent size and fingerprints wipe right off. The face recognition thing may be a bit of a gimmick, but it does recognize faces. The red eye removal is ok but not perfect. Our girls have light eyes and for the most part no red eye. If you want you can use the red eye removal tool right on the camera and edit your picture. It also has a pet and kids mode for trying to take pictures of something that won't necessarily stay absolute still for a picture. I used it a few times and I guess it works ok. The lag time between pictures is fast as well. It has a movie mode and you can also take multiple shots one after the other until your memory card fills up as well. When comparing this to the new SD750, the only difference is a half inch bigger viewfinder on the SD750 for an extra $50. This viewfinder is fine though. I picked this up for $218. A steal in my opinion. I don't have a desire to move into the SLR field yet, and really don't see what else I need in a camera. I mean 7.1 megapixels is plenty. When I printed the pictures, they were beautiful. True, the flash could be stronger and some indoor shots were a tiny bit dark but brightened up with an enhancement tool on a separate photo editing tool. No big deal though. I just ordered another one actually since it works so well.

Great camera, but you better hope it doesn't break...

Strengths: Clear, vivid pictures; nice, compact design

Weakness: Very fragile LCD screen; very poor Canon customer/repair service

I bought this camera and it took great pictures, at least until I took it out of the case one day (only 2 weeks after I bought it!) to discover that the LCD screen had shattered internally.

I saw that other Canon camera reviews warned that the LCD was prone to breaking, but I figured the Canon brand was trustworthy enough to provide great customer support/repair if that were to happen.

I was wrong.

25 days since Canon received my camera for repair and 2 customer service calls to check on the status of my camera repair: still no camera. The Canon rep I just spoke to on the phone said the camera parts should arrive within another 2 weeks (5 weeks after receipt of camera), and that cameras would be repaired in order of receipt. Then, she matter-of-factly stated that some cameras in the repair shop have been in there "for two to three months" and they still hadn't gotten to them, yet somehow her logic still compelled her to say that they would start repairing mine after the parts were received after 2 weeks. When I asked if there was anyone I could complain to, she sarcastically replied "I'm listening," before transferring me to her supervisor.

Her supervisor basically reiterated the company line, saying "parts are ordered overseas from Japan," "it takes some time for them to arrive from a foreign country," and that the repair confirmation e-mail and repair policy, which stipulates 7-10 business days for repair and return, does have the following caveat: "Actual times may vary. Seasonal volume or repairs requiring special parts may add more time," which is the catch-all for circumstances like this in which, as the supervisor put it, camera servicing may take "more than 30 days to order parts and complete the repair." He provided no possible remediation at all, just served as another complaint buffer, and offered to continue referring me to further supervisors, which presumably would have just reiterated the company's repair caveat: "Actual [repair] times may vary."

If you dare, buy the camera -- it was a great camera for 2 weeks until it broke -- but cross your fingers that it doesn't ever need to be repaired. Otherwise, you may experience the disappointment that compelled me to write this review.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

Strengths: Price. Takes good pictures. Very little lag time. Compact.

Weakness: No IS, proprietary battery.

Although this camera does not have IS, it is a nice little camera for the price. It is lightweight and compact which makes it easy to carry around and have handy when needed. I have the SD800 also and the picture quality is on par with that, but you do get some blurry pictures. On the whole though, I would say it is definitely nice for the price and the only thing lacking is the IS.

Great shots in perfect lighting, horrible in dim...

Strengths: Small size, excellent photos in good lighting, fun (some say gimmicky) settings, takes SD cards, compact battery charger with foldaway prongs (great for traveling), fast start-up & burst mode

Weakness: Does horrible in less than perfect lighting with no flash, sometimes requires a lot of fiddling around with manual settings to get a decent photo

I first decided to buy this camera because it was the smallest one currently in stores. I like the boxy shape, which makes it easier for me to hold than the ones with rounded corners. For me, image quality was a big let-down on this camera. Set on auto mode, the camera takes crisp photos with good color reproduction when outdoors in bright light. Most of the time, it will also take good photos with the flash on auto setting. If you like taking photos with the flash off, this is not the camera for you. With the flash off in anything less than perfect lighting, this camera will actually give you a blurry double image. Nearly every photo I took under these conditions was unusable. Although this is obviously due to camera shake, I have very steady hands and have never had this problem with other cameras. You can solve the "blurry double image" problem by messing around with the manual settings and increasing the ISO, but then the picture ends up very grainy. The camera is so sensitive to camera shake, that I will still end up with a blurry double image even if I set the camera on a table and press the shutter release, or if I set it on self-timer while holding it as steady as possible in my hand. I've attached 3 cropped photos, showing the image quality under different settings: no flash and auto ISO (200), no flash and higher ISO (800 - automatically chosen by the camera if you push the "print" button while holding the shutter release down), and the last picture is under bright light. All three pictures are hand-held, no tripod. Despite this major drawback, this camera has a lot going for it. The start-up speed and continuous "burst" mode speeds are amazingly fast, the camera is nice & compact, the crisp "pastel-like" colors are pleasing to the eye, and it has a lot of fun shooting modes like color accent (keeps one color and changes the rest of the image to B/W), color swap, vivid colors, sepia, etc. Although the color "tricks" can be done afterwards with photo editing software, it can be convenient and fun to have it built into the camera. Overall, I'm a bit torn about this camera. It has a lot of good things going for it, with one major drawback. If you like taking pictures without the flash, and don't want to mess around with a lot of settings, it's probably not the camera for you.

SD1000

Strengths: size, everything you can find in a bigger Canon

Weakness: none compared to other SDs

received this camera in the mail. Really nice--does everything that any other SDs will do, except for IS that is probably a useful feature. photos are just as good, videos are just as good. Price is a big plus! substantially cheaper than a lot of SDs! Highly recommended.

Good, but not as good as SD800 IS

Strengths: small size, stylish body, innovational design (silver and black mixed), consistently good pic quality...

Weakness: price ok, but not competitive. functions not enough. NO Image Stablization!! Only 7 MP, no any advancement over its pal SD800IS!

Overall it's a good camera. It inherited its precedents like SD800IS, having good pic quality (Canon's feature) and stylish body. Price is ok, now $249; but it's not competitive compared with other brands, even with Canon SD800 IS. So unless you have a strong desire on particular features of SD1000, otherwise I think SD800 IS is a better option, priced at $299.

DEAD OUT OF THE BOX

Strengths: Looks nice as a paper weight!

Weakness: DEAD upon arrival!!! Lens ERROR

I just got the camera not less than several hours ago, I charged the battery, popped it into this camera, expecting it to work, and next thing i know, its says lens error - restart camera. Well i did that several times, to no avail! I did some research online and found this problem happens to many people, usually with the camera not function ever again!!! and guess what, people have said that CANON actually charges people money to fix this problem as it is not covered under warranty due to abuse, also known as, a single scratch on the camera, and they will use this excuse.... WHAT A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE, i dont know who is at blame, CANON for releasing a sh*tty product, which doesnt suprise me, or Buydig.com for selling this sh*tty product! SAVE YOURSELF the headache, and DONT BUY THIS GARBAGE

Canon foo

Strengths: Doesn't work.

Weakness: Doesn't work.

Arrived malfunctioning. T/S said it was a faulty lens assembly. Promptly delivered to Factory Service Center. They stated they "probably" stocked the part. This means NO.
Only buy this "camera" from a vendor you can take it right back to and use the refund to buy a camera that works. Also I noticed it takes crummy indoor pix without flash when it doesn't shutdown.

canon sd1000 camera

Strengths: high resolution, vivid picture

Weakness: none

There are two versions of Canon SD1000 digital camera. I believe the difference between the two is just about the appearance. This one has the black rims around the lens, the other has all silver outlook. In terms of functionality, there are no differences. Overall quality is very good.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

Strengths: Small, viewfinder window

Weakness: None for a compact

The problem with most camera's are they are to Big. Not so with the Canon SD1000. Just put it in your pocket and you are ready for that Great Photo. Ease of use is fairly simple, resolution is great for the size of the camera. I have been using the camera for a few days and happy with it so far.

Nice camera

Strengths: Size, price

Weakness: No IS

Compact and stylish looking for a casual digital camera. Although lack of image stabilization may get some blurry pictures, the camera produces impressive picture quality with daylight. Overall, I think this is a great camera under 200.

very good camera

Strengths: size, speed, image quality, excellent video quality, retro look.

Weakness: no battery charge meter, videos only in mjpeg format.

Pros:
a) I actually consider the low zoom (x3) a positive thing -- wide zoom typically means poor optics quality (chromatic and geometric aberrations).
b) This camera is tiny. Our previous camera was so large
that we would always leave it at home! With this one, however, you can carry it in your shirt pocket everywhere.
c) Excellent videos. Unlike other cameras, this one offers
30fps and VGA quality video recording -- the quality of
a standard resolution TV. This is like having a digital camcorder, except the size of a match box (ok, two match boxes).
d) I *absolutely* love the LCD screen, with the
feature of rotating the photos 90deg as you tilt the
camera -- this makes a very efficient use of the LCD
space.
e) Very fast. 0.7s shutter lag. 2sec startup time.

Cons:
a) The "battery meter" gives you a 5minute warning
before the power goes out. Combined with the
proprietary battery feature this can be a serious
annoyance.
b) Videos only in motion-JPEG uncompressed format. This means that the 1GB SD card is full after only 10minutes of
recording. I wish it could do MPEG4, which would allow
at leas 1 hour for the same memory.

Good camera

Strengths: Fast, compact, LCD screen, decent zoom

Weakness: No manual focus

The camera is very cool, is a nice size, and the price wasn't too bad. The only downside so far has been the lack of a manual focus, but that's not a big deal. The regular auto-focus has worked just fine. The lag time between turning the camera on and off is minimal, as is the time between pictures and switching modes (very fast). The LCD screen is very nice and seems to display all of the picture, however the "old-fashioned" view finder only displays about 80% of the actual picture being taken (not a big deal). The video mode is good and I can zoom in and out while filming, that's cool. I have not discovered all of the details yet, but I look forward to exploring more.

Awesome Digital Camera

Strengths: Great point & shoot - small, fast, great pictures, Fits even in tight jeans pockets, and is quick to take pictures. Face recognition works really well, not flawless, but really amazing

Weakness: Some indoor pictures without the flash are a bit blurry, if you don't hold it steady.

Small and light weight, rechargable battery which lasts a long time and recharges quickly.

Build quality is good, though the battery door is very flimsy feeling. The lens is average in aperture and range, but of good quality. The pictures turned out nicely, although you will have to deal with an occasional blurry corner. It's also very easy to use, with a great screen.

Awesome power in a little package

Strengths: I previously had the Canon PowerShot SD550. This camera is smaller, takes sharper, more vibrant photos, has a MUCH better battery life, and is pretty much better in all ways.

Weakness: Because there are few buttons, you often have to dive into a variety of menus to make basic adjustments. Also, the manual controls are a bit lacking.

What can I say? The PowerShot SD1000 packs a lot of pop in a sleek little package. The picture quality is great. The battery life is a great improvement over my previous PowerShot camera. Canon definitely continues to innovate. Sometimes, since the camera lacks advanced manual controls, I can't get the auto focus to lock on to what I want to take a picture of, especially in macro mode, but this is to be expected with any inexpensive point-and-shoot.

Excellent compact camera

Strengths: Extremely compact, bright and beautiful LCD. Excellent image quality. 3X optical zoom.

Weakness: Noisy at high ISOs. Proprietary battery. No image stabilizer.

This offering from Canon should attract those who value compact point and shoot cameras. Despite the SD1000 being one of the lightest and most compact camera in its class, it still gives excellent image quality. Noise levels, however, are high at ISOs of 200 and higher and pictures look real bad beyond ISO 400. The 3X zoom is useful. The canon battery lasts long but doesn't allow you to use disposable alkaline when you run out of juice. Some other features like color swap or replace are fun to play with but not really useful. Overall, this is a great party camera, but not for the serious photographer.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

Strengths: compact

Weakness: noisy in higher iso in low light

First of all, this camera is tiny! whenever I want to capture a moment, I just take it out of my pocket, slip it out of the little case (I had to buy for it...) and shoot. Shooting in sufficient lighting conditions yields very good, sometimes spectacular results, great contrast, lively colors, fine resolution and quite sharp images. The manual white balance presets work very well, as well as the custom balance option. The auto white balance works good most of the time, although sometimes makes for boring colors in the image. Using higher ISO settings (400 or 800) in darker scenes makes for very noisy images.

PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera

Strengths: small size, quick response time, good picture and video quality

Weakness: zoom

I bought this camera for a family vacation trip. We love it. It's very compact, easy to carry around. We took lots of pictures and are satisfied with the results. It produces crisp images. Response time is very fast, only little delay between pictures. Video quality is surprisingly good, comparable to my Sony camcorder. We end up using the video feature a lot. The only complain is the zoom feature. It could be better.

***Great, Easy to Use, Compact, Point-and-Shoot...

Strengths: Very compact, high-quality construction, instant start-up time, beautiful images, fast speed between shots.

Weakness: None found yet

I am by no means an experienced, knowledgeable individual in the deep world of photography. I am an "average Joe" who wanted a high-quality "dummy proof" compact digital camera to take on vacations, list items on Ebay, etc. After researching for a few days I decided the Canon SD1000 seemed to give the most bang for the price. I took my SD1000 on vacation and shot hundreds of photographs over the course of a week under all different conditions. The Canon performed, in my humble opinion, exceptionally well. I've had digital cameras before, but this one takes particularly crisp, vivid, clear shots in its automatic mode. I am sure a more experienced photographer would be able to tweak its manual settings to get even better picture quality, but in my experience it worked great without having to do anything other than utilize the shutter button. In fact, I have received many compliments on the quality of the pictures from those that have seen them. I would highly recommend this Canon for those that are looking for an excellent quality compact point-and-shoot camera.

Good Digital Camera

Strengths: compact, light, stylish, large LCD display and easy to use

Weakness: no Optical Picture Stabilization feature. the fastest shutter only support 1/1500

This compact and light digital camera comes with 7.1 effective MP for photo quality. This is a good value DC for beginner & experienced users. However this DC only suppport JPEG format pictures which means that you can't get RAW format picture from it. This will let down most of the advanced users who prefer RAW pictures for best quality and editing. This camera doesn't have OPS function either which can increase stabilization of the picture when you not holding the camera firmly. But overall, for daily use, this camera is still a good value. Beautiful color and clear picture. Micro Mode at 3cm which is good for me. If you are a beginner or if you don't want to spend too much on a high-end digital camera, this is a good one to start with!

Top-notch compact camera

Strengths: extreme compact, large LCD screen, 7.1 megapixels

Weakness: nonne so far

This SD1000 7.1-megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom is extremely compact that can be taken almost anywhere. It fits perfectly my need of a small camera that has quick response, relatively high resolution, and is sold at a competitively low price. So far I can't think of anything negative to say about this camera. I was pleased with its excellent image quality and the useful feature set.

Good buy for casual pictures

Strengths: Cheap, fast shutter, slick small design

Weakness: No image stabilizer

Camera starts fast and takes pictures immediately from starting it up. Good picture in the daylight, however in some situations it gets blurry pictures, for that reason the Image stabilizer is recommended for nightlife.

All in all, good features, good price, slick design.

THE GOOD: Excellent image quality; solid build quality; speedy performance; optical viewfinder; face detection. THE BAD: No manual exposure controls. THE BOTTOM LINE: Small size, excellent image quality, and a solid, though not extensive, feature set make the SD1000 a great choice for a compact camera.
