Infinity P965-S Motherboard

Strengths: Overclocks very easily, a lot of options in the BIOS to change, has firewire port

Weakness: Package product is a little weak, not much other than cables and manual, price somehwat on the high side as compared to the Gigabyte DS3 that I also considered. product came late in the market.

I like this Motherboard a lot since I am able to overclock my E4300 easily to 3.4 Ghz and without much change. I am still learning the other options in the BIOS since there is a lot than can be done. Somehat expensive but worth the price difference over the Gigabyte DS3

Solid overclocking MB

Strengths: overclockbility, Firewire port, fanless northbridge

Weakness: old chipset, needs bios update for newer CPUs

The onboard BIOS has the double restarting issue, which is solved by upgrading to the latest version. The fanless NB is about 5-10 degrees above CPU core temp during normal usage and never gets above 45C.

Use The Force the Dark Side -Infinity P965-S is the...

Strengths: Great for the advanced do it yourself overclocker. This board rocks! Plenty of expansion slots, firewire and USB headers galore, great BIOS settings for incrementaly OC'ing chips, DUAL CORE Support...

Weakness: None so far.

My anticipation waiting for delivery was like awaiting delivery of the X-RAY glasses or Sea Monkeys ordered from the back page of a super hero comic book. Come to think of it, the board IS marketed as the "Dark" edition, much the same way AMD and Intel are marketing Special Editions, or Black Edition CPU's aimed at the serious system builder. I was very impressed from the get go. The presentation/packaging was first rate, much like opening a present, constantly finding little doodads such as extra firewire expansion slots, SATA drive cables etc. The installation per the included manual was straightforward, very descriptive and easy. This board is a real treasure trove for the OC'er and builder. At the time this review is written, the available chips, memory and expansion cards available make this board a steal and insure a robust upgrade path. I'd consider myself an above average hobbyist system builder. I've not taken the time, nor plan to at the moment to stress a chip, memory or the board for overclocking, but from other posts this board is very capable. GIYF, use it. Have fun!

Great board for reasonable price

Strengths: Good overclocker, solid capacitors, support of Penryn CPUs with updated bios, on board power and reset buttons. Lots of USB, Firewire and Sata connectors.

Weakness: Northbridge is hot. Sata ports locaton. It would be nice to have a eSata port.

Running E2180 at 3.3 stable with a moderate bump to CPU voltage. Everything else worked as expected out of the box. I'm a happy owner of this board now. I will probably upgrade to Penryn based CPU couple years down the road :)

However there are few things that I don't like. Northbridge is hot and cooler is not adequate for over-clocking. Location of north-bridge is also a little questionable because it could interfere with some CPU coolers. Dual slot video card (8800 GTS in my case) is interfering with two blue Sata connectors. 90 degree connector would solve this problem but still location is not perfect.

Got it for relatively cheap from MotherboarPro.com I could highly recommend this site for support but always check the price around :)

good MB

Strengths: high-end board for low-end price

Weakness: none

This MB was state of the art in 2007, now it's available at the same price as a good entry level P35 board. DFI's designer used to be Abit's top engineer, and now they have the best overclocker friendly boards around. It has nice touches like a reset switch on the board for those times when you pushed it too far. Lots of settings to play around with. A great toy.

Infinity P965-S Motherboard

Strengths: Solid caps, overclocking to over FSB500MHz, BIOS options, dark layout, Matrix raid

Weakness: No CMOS reload, double boot, location of 8 pin power

This board has famous bios options of DFI boards. with so many settings wish it had CMOS reload. The 8 pin power is under HSF next to memory slots so could be hard to get cable connected. The board will hit 500Mhz without problem and high DRAM. This is a great choice for the price.

Great

Strengths: 3 pci, high oc, firewire

Weakness: minor issues

this is overall a great mb with almost every feature i wanted at this price. plenty of usb's and sata ports, 3 pci with 2 pci express slots. i do wish there were more sata and usb's since I have a lot of hard drives and peripherals, but for the price of this I am willing to settle.

i have mine paired with an e6600, and I normally run it oc'ed to about 3.6, 400mhz*9. I have gotten it higher but not to use on an everyday basis. also worked just fine with my corsair 620w psu.

lately my northbridge has gotten pretty hot at around 55C... and I didn't touch the voltage on anything besides the cpu..

Another Solid DFI motherboard

Strengths: Price, ovcerclocking potential, build quality.

Weakness: Only 2 PCI-e 16x slots, Northbridge heatsink uses 2 hooks instead of more common through-hole mounting, needs better chipset cooling, could use MOFSET cooling.

It seems that I'm more picky towards DFI motherboards than just about any manufacturer -- and that's because my expectations for them are so *high* (rather than the other way around). It seems like every DFI motherboard I've owned has been great to me, and the new 965 Inifnity board is no exception.

I also have a 975X/G board which shares many of the 965's strengths and weaknesses -- but both are rock-solid overclockers just so long as you fit a good NB cooling solution to it (Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II coolers have done me well on these boards,. and these coolers help mitigate the size-problem -- where the NB cooler interferes with the mounting of an aftermarket CPU cooler -- nicely). An Evercool VC-RE heatsink/fan can be easily mounted on the Southbridge chip for imporved cooling, especially if you' retrying to OC this board heavily.

I've set the 965 to run at 400MHz (after building my system and verifying that everythign was working correctly with stock settings)... And although I haven't done a full stress test on this board, it has been quite stable so far and I have every reason to beleive that the board will do this speed and more (allowing me to get an E6600 CPU up to 3.6+ GHz with its 9x multiplier and voltages that are quite reasonable -- under 1.5 volts to the CPU).

If you're not planning on running SLI, and if you don't mid the fact that running a Crossfire setup will leavbe you with no free PCI-e 16x slots, then this is a great 775 board for the money -- and if my example is representative, this little board, with just a touch of aftermarket tweaking, looks like it will consistently outperform two 680i chipset motherboards I've owned in the last few months (and at a price, even adding on the additional coolers, that is quite a bit below those 680i MBs).
