WD Caviar SE16 750GB

Strengths: Great hard drive, very fast and very large. No problems after two month.

Weakness: Price

This is one of the best drives given the performance and capacity on the market. I have been a large fan of the Raptor 150 and although this is not as fast it is not bad. I have had it for two months and use it for video editing of large files and BF2. My system specs include 2.67 gigahertz Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Motherboard D975XBX2,NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX, Corasair 2 gigs DDR Ram Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2

Zoooooooooooooooooooooom

Strengths: Fast!

Weakness: None

No joke this drive is almost as fast as my Raptor 150 drive; for large files (I think it might be faster). I use this drive primarily as a backup & storage drive. A bonus, is that it uses less power than other 750GB drives on the market (always good). I really can't stress how happy I am with these new drives that use perpendicular recording strategy, the performance is amazing.

Dead on Arrival

Strengths: Large size.

Weakness: Possibly a quality issue.

I purchased two of these hard drives last week. One appears to be defective and makes a clicking noise. WD LifeGuard Diagnostics recognized both, but I received an error message and test stopped and locked up. I was able to format one but Disk Management does not recognize the other. The one that I got working now gives me an error message when I try to move data to it.

Since this is the only review here at the moment, I just wanted to point out that out of 7 reviews at Newegg, all 7 give this drive a five-star rating

You might try RMAing the drive which is what you are supposed to do if you get DOAs...

WD 750GB Sata -300

Strengths: Quiet easy setup

Weakness: Gets warmer than I expected and wish it came in the more secure NTFS format.

Fairly pleased with product overall. A bit tedious to reformat to NTFS but this is probably expected with this size drive. I would purchase this again and am looking to add another one for backup or possibly RAID.

Awesome Drive

Strengths: Extremely fast and quite

Weakness: First one DOA

This thing is fast. I upgraded from an old hitachi deskstar and I cannot beleive the performance. Vista HD rating went from 5.3 to 5.9 and you can't even hear it compared to the old one. Moving a 1.7gb file from a pair of Raptors in Raid-0, I got a peak of 85mbs write and about 65mbs read. This is an awesome HD, you cant go wrong with Western Digital!

Western Digital WD7500AAKS Hard Drive

Strengths: huge, fast, quiet

Weakness: pricey

I bought the Western Digital 750 GB Hard Drive (WD7500AAKS) for a new PC that I built in August 2007. I picked this model for it's huge capacity and based upon an article at Tom's Hardware that said it was fast. You definitely pay a premium for a single large hard drive versus 2 smaller hard drives, but I think it was worth it.

After 5 months I haven't had a problem. Windows and other programs load quickly. I don't hear the drive when it's working and I don't have to worry about more space for a long time.

I would definitely recommend this hard drive! (Note: I have read that other WD Hard Drives of smaller capacity in this model line don't use the same technology so don't assume that the things you hear about the 750 GB model would apply to a smaller capacity in the same model family.)

WD Hard Drive

Strengths: Big capacity, SATA

Weakness: price

I bought this primarily for the big storage capacity. The reviews on this are very positive and it can be a contender for the WD Raptors. The price has come down on this but it is still on the high side.

WD Caviar SE16 750GB

Strengths: Fast, good price, easy installation and configuration

Weakness: None

Unbeatable for capacity, speed and price. I had the drive up, running and configured in about 30 min. I would recommend the drive to anyone needing video storage capacity or for any storage applications.

Works great, no complaints

Strengths: VERY quiet, fast, large capacity

Weakness: None!

It's a hard disk, what can I say? :-)

As of December, 2007, the 750GB category seems to be the value sweet spot for new hard drives. I've used drives from all the major manufacturers over the years, and the Western Digital drives have proved to be a top choice for performance and reliability. So far (1 month), this drive has performed flawlessly. I'm using it in an external enclosure with eSATA.
