Great DriveStrengths: Easy to intall and use. Fast. Goes into sleep mode when not in use. Weakness: Gets hot (hasn't caused any problems), the one touch software hasn't proven useful to me. I love this drive. I also own an earlier version, the 250GB USB 2.0 which is also great. I use the firewire connection on this drive and like this model even better because when estimating the time remaining to complete copying files, it seems more accurate and the estimate doesn't fluctuate as wildly as my older USB model. I also use it to capture video files from my MiniDV camera and it has performed flawlessly in this capacity. 96% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Easy to use once you get it working Weakness: Software doesn't do networked drives. I had substantial problems getting the drive up and working. There were 3 problems, 1 due to my hardware, and the others software related. 95% of readers found this review helpful. Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Looks, size, quiet, ease of setup, great software. Weakness: None I purchased this unit to use as a separate backup for an aging computer, and two recently purchased digital cameras. The USB connectivity and external design were attractions for this product. This unit is quite compact and nice looking. 95% of readers found this review helpful. Terrible ProductStrengths: Em, well, it's heavy? Weakness: Drive enclosure cooling is poorly designed. Your hard drive will fail due to the heat build-up. Tip: when searching for information on a product search with word failure in the search term. Why? Because I didn't and thought the One Touch would be a good buy. After it failed and I was looking for solutions was when I found out about the thousands of other One Touch buyers desperate to solve their hard drive failures. I believe there is/was a class action suit against Maxtor for selling a product unsuitable for the purpose. 94% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Easy to set-up and install. Straightforward instructions. Weakness: The drive will appear as 'locked' in WIN XP until some data is stored to the drive. This was confusing at first. This drive is fantastic. It is easy to set-up, the one button funcitonality is simple, and from a price/gig perspective is a great deal. I have found no problems with the drive whatsoever, and the case design and blue LED indicator are very cool. 91% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Easy to setup. Lightweight for the size. High Speed USB and Firewire connections. Weakness: I have not found any yet. I was looking for large capacity (300 GB), as I wanted to warehouse my 2,000 plus CDs on the drive. Also, I am using it as shared network drive, so that all my computers and laptop can access and use the drive. Everything has worked perfectly. I highly recommend this drive to anyone who has a huge need for space. 90% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: 1) huge capacity, 2) easy to use, 3) looks great, 4) quiet, 5) comes with excellent dantz retrospect software, 6) supports both usb 2.0 and firewire Weakness: none This drive's quiet, easy-to-use, and has huge capacity. Dantz Retrospect, the backup software that comes packed with the drive is simple to use and gets the job done. I didn't buy the drive for the software, but Retrospect really is great. 90% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Easy setup and installation. Product design is functional and stylish. Very quiet. 16MB buffer and 7200rpm reduces lag in data retrieval. ON/Off power switch. Weakness: When installing, font on Maxtor installation setup extended beyond window and therefore made some words impossible to read. Not a big deal to me, but novices may be a bit confused by this. Although I have only had this item for a short time I am already extremely impressed. Unit is by far the sleekest in its' class (even the Firewire & USB cables are clear coated so you can see the silver jacket underneath...nice touch Maxtor). On/Off switch is essential to me since I can leave the unit plugged in, yet power down the drive when not in use to protect data from corruption/viruses/trojan programs. I chose not to install the retrospect software so I cannot comment on it. Overall I would highly recommend this item. 300GB may seem like overkill to some, but the cost ratio per GB and the fact it is always better to go above what you currently need in terms of storage made this item a must for me. 88% of readers found this review helpful. Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: simple setup, storage capacity, construction & design Weakness: none Maxtor has solved my digital storage problems with the One Touch. Sleek design, quiet, solid contruction and very simple to setup. As a digital artist and photographer with a large body of work Maxtor has eliminated my need for a big library of backup disks to store my work. I highly recommend the One Touch! 85% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: easy setup and installation Weakness: None Backup and storage is a snap with the one touch button and it doesn't take up much desk space. Very easy to interface with multiple computers including PC's and an IMAC. 83% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Huge capacity, on/off switch, OneTouch button. Weakness: Dantz Retrospect can be a bit hard to figure out Another excellent Maxtor external hard drive. They get better each time. Finally an on/off switch so you don't have to plug and unplug it every time (like the old Personal Storage 5000LE). Very fast with Firewire connection. If you leave it formatted for FAT32, you can use it to swap files between a PC and a MAC. 83% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Apr 22, 2005 Thanks for the tip about formatting to accomodate PC and Mac use. I have three computers - one's a Mac the other two are PCs. I was wondering about file swapping since I have alot of music on my PCs from P2P downloads that I want to put on my Mac which doesn't support most P2P sites. I also have alot of photos on my PCs that were saved under Photoshop Elements 2 which isn't supported under Mac OS X and couldn't be accessed from a CD.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Good looks, whisper quiet, easy installation Weakness: The base does not fit snuggly with the body - it really does not matter! I can not find anything to complain about. Hardware is excellent, performs flawlessly while connected in either USB or 1394 mode. The 1394 cable supplied is a 6 pin to 6 pin - almost all Sony products are 4 pin I-Link(I believe they are the first to implement the I-Link bus). This is a very minor complain as one can easily purchase a 6 pin to 4 pin I-Link Cable, these are available dime a dozen so to speak. 80% of readers found this review helpful. Dec 25, 2005 It DOES restore single files. You just have to click the button that says "Restore" then it will give you a list of files to choose from. And YES, it is scary at first, because I too thought it would restore my entire computer once I pressed the button. But thankfully, it let's you choose ALL FILES, or just SELECTED FILES.
Reply by member: gtrkev
Dec 25, 2005 Single Files CAN BE restored. AND you can select the VERSION of the file you want, based on the date of the backup. Very complete & thoughtful backup software.

Maxtor One Touch External 300GB Hard DriveStrengths: Sleek and sturdy look. Sophisticated software. Weakness: Drives failed. Software not what it was cracked up to be. Tech support more focused on wearing you down than on providing help. Over the last 8 months I've purchased 3 Maxtor hard drives, full of enthusiasm because they're supposed to be the best. In that short time, two of the drives have crashed. 78% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Feb 6, 2006 I also had two drives fail, each after a month- a major problem because it contained quite a bit of data after one month. I certainly do not want to buy another. Any suggestions on a better product?

Sep 13, 2006 I have a Maxtor One Touch 300 GB. after six months it already failed. I called customer support and agreed to replace the unit but the data will all be gone. I lost years of pictures and videos. The Tech support recommended a company to retrieve my data but that company is charging between $700.00 to $2900.00.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Looks, Light, Fast, Big Storage, and Easy to use Weakness: None. I bought this drive mainly for back up the data from my internal hard drive. It's easy to set it up and fast file transfer too. It took me about half and hour to format to NTFS. I already bought 2 of them. Now, I have plenty of storage. Highly recommend! 75% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Slim, sleek design with an extremely small footprint. Any third grader could connect it to the computer. Weakness: NONE! This is the most wonderful thing to be designed for use with computers. It truly is a one touch backup. The software works flawlessly and it does a one touch back up very quickly for my 120GB hard drive. It also functions as another integral hard drive that is utilized the same as the "C:" drive. It holds an enormous number of digital photographs and I have only begun to scratch the surface. 71% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Large capacity, quiet, easy to use Weakness: Slightly bulky and heavy I ordered through Best Buy on line, so I could go to the local branch and picked it up on the same day. It was cheaper on line than in the store. In addition, I also have a $70 mail in rebate. I check on pricegrabber and there are other stores on line with cheaper price. Hower, I need this right away, therefore, I cannot wait. 43% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Had two drives fail within a year of purchase.Strengths: Worked well until it failed. Weakness: Went through two drives in a year. Both failed. All data lost. First drive purchased failed in 6th month. Maxtor replaced with a new one. Warranty ran out at end of original purchase. This drive once again failed and now can not be replaced. I love itStrengths: Fast (USB 2.0), a lot of storage for a $, looks great Weakness: Gets hot (didn't cause any problems though); One Touch software is incompatible with MS .NET framework 2.0 I chose Maxtor because when I built my computer 5 years ago I put a Maxtor internal drive and it still works flawlessly. Just purchase for my ibookStrengths: So far, I think this is a great drive. It's quiet & fast & solid. Weakness: The installation instructions for both the drive & the software are on .pdfs which are hard to reference. I would prefer having hard copies. I had to download an update on Retrospect (a 6.1 version) from the Dantz website to make this work seamlessly with my OS 10.4 operating system. Once done, it worked as I had hoped. Excellent ProductStrengths: Very quiet, fast, easy to use, portable, automatic sleep function Weakness: Runs hot, software starts automatically with windows (can be disabled) I didn't really need extra space, but I got a deal on this for about half what they sell for, so I went for it. I'm glad I did. This thing ROCKS! I fix computers for a living, and it's nice to be able to do backup/restores onsite. The fact that it has both USB2 and firewire makes it extremely flexible. I haven't used the OneTouch/Dantz software a lot, but it looks pretty solid and easy to use. The drive does run pretty hot, but it hasn't caused any problems. The drive is nearly impossible to hear when running, and when it goes into auto-sleep mode, it is completely silent. I loved this thing so much, I'm buying another one at full price. Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard DriveStrengths: Very easy to install and use. Weakness: None so far. The product was easy to install. I have used it extensively to store photos and other back up information from my computer hard drive. It is very easy to transfer the information as it appears as another hard drive on my windows directory. It was an excellent buy for so much additional storage. I would highly recommend it to others. Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive
Strengths: Very easy installation. NTFS format was quick. Constructed with heavy grade metal. Necessary cables (Firewire and USB) included in kit. Software easy to use. OneTouch II backup - a breeeze.
Weakness: None.
Performed both a Firewire and USB 2.0 test of 445 folder and 5,590 .BMP files copied from the internal hard drive to the Maxtor One Touch External 300GB Hard Drive. Both tests were 82.5 Gig copies. Took 93 minutes for both the Firewire test and the USB 2.0 copy tests. This is approximately a 15 MB/sec transfer. Your copy speeds may vary according to your individual system. These bulk file copies worked flawlessly. This Maxtor worked right out of the box - no problems what so ever.
