Nice Microsoft Ergonomic Desktop

Strengths: Great Keyboard Layout. Comfortable mouse. Good SW key options

Weakness: Limited wireless range.

I bought this same desktop configuration for my office at work a few months ago. I have used Microsoft's ergonomic keyboard (4000) before I made this purchase and really liked the layout.
I was looking for an ergomic mouse due to developing pain in my right wrist and I also wanted a wireless split keyboard. The keyboard is nearly identical to Microsofts wired ergomic keyboard (4000) without a couple of indicators (caps lock and number lock) on the keyboard itself. The mouse is really comfortable to use and keeps your wrist in a more natural position. It did not take much time to get used to its' different shape. The SW selection for the mouse is also nice. My only gripe is an occassional signal issue that I have but this is very infrequent.
I liked this combo so much that I just ordered the same set for my home PC. I would highly recommend this setup if you are looking for something that has a good ergonomic design.

Nice product

Strengths: Easy to control and with most features I want

Weakness: arm support is not good

I got this for my daily work. I need to work over 10 hours in front of the computer every day. Before I have a logitech and it is terrible. Break down a the time.
After search online, this product was recommended by other users and I like it very much.
I would recommend it to other users as well.

A good keyboard with an interesting problem

Strengths: The keyboard is wireless, of course, and offers numerous controls (volume up and down, mute, open messenger, etc.)

Weakness: The range seems to flake at ridiculous ranges.

The keyboard does its job well for the most part, but the wireless range was pretty bad. Don't plan on using it more than 3 or 4 feet (yeah, seriously) away from the receiver.

Good wireless keyboard/mouse combo

Strengths: Good wireless reception. Very usable keyboard and mouse combo.

Weakness: Space bar on keyboard makes a loud clicking noise when used.

Earlier this year I started using a KVM so I had to give up my Bluetooth keyboard/mouse which has worked flawlessly for a couple of years. I found a really good deal on a Microsoft "Wireless Laser Desktop 6000" so I went ahead and purchased a couple since I've always had good luck with MS keyboards and mice in the past. Even though I got a good price, that turned out to be a horrible purchase because the wireless receiver was so bad. If you are a touch typist, you should avoid that set at all cost unless you enjoy constantly having to retype whatever you were working on (I'm a programmer, so it was extremely irritating).

After about 3 months, I finally gave up completely on that set and decided to go shopping again. This time I did a little more research and bought the Microsoft "Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000". This is a review of the new set, which is MUCH better than the previous experience I had - I am going to try to review the keyboard, mouse and receiver separately even though they come in a single package.

*** Keyboard ***
Pros: I've been a fan of the split keyboards ever since I started using one almost 10 years ago so that isn't a problem for me at all. I also like that this keyboard has the normal layout for the insert, delete, arrow and other special keys between the keyboard and keypad. Since I tend to use keyboard shortcuts a lot, it really kills me when those special keys are laid out differently to save space. This keyboard also has a zoom key right in the middle of the keyboard and I've found that it is actually fairly useful when configured as a scroll button instead of zoom.

Cons: I really don't like the function lock feature that seems to have become a standard feature on the new MS keyboards, but I can live with it since it doesn't ever switch out of the F-Lock mode unless you manually push the button (which I will never do). The other problem is that the space bar makes a horribly loud clicking noise when pressed - almost like it is getting stuck on the way down. I have read that other people have noticed the same thing and if I were working in an office that would probably be a deal-breaker for me since it is sooooo loud. Since I work from home, I figure I can deal with it.

*** Mouse ***
Not a whole lot to say here since this mouse works exactly as expected. It is a more ergonomic shape than I was previously used to, but it hasn't turned out to be a problem at all. One thing I've notice with both the 6000 and 7000 desktop mice is that the scroll wheel doesn't work everywhere that it should. That's kind of a weird problem since my previous MS mouse worked everywhere. Anyway, that's not a huge deal for me since I don't use it much - but my wife had to get used to it in some of the programs she uses. (I'm not saying that the scroll wheel doesn't work at all - just that there are a few things it doesn't work in where it should.)

*** Wireless Receiver ***
The wireless receiver is much better than the type that comes with the other non-Bluetooth MS keyboards and mice. It is about the size of a USB flash key and plugs directly into a USB port. The reception is very good and seems to work just as well as any Bluetooth receiver I have used. It's also nice not to have that big mouse-sized dongle sitting on my desktop - which always irritated me since I'm using a wireless keyboard/mouse exactly because I want to avoid wires on my desktop. I did have a problem plugging it into the USB port on my monitor since it was a tiny bit too bulky, but I worked around that by using a little male-female USB extension key (for ~$2) and just plugged the receiver into that. I've been using this desktop set for about a week now with not a single missed key.

*** Conclusion ***
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase - although it was a bit expensive. If it weren't for the irritating space bar, this would probably be a perfect setup.

As one last comment, I should say that if you're not using a KVM you really should at least look at the Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos from Microsoft. Those have excellent range, never miss keys and don't have the irritating space bar from this set.

If this is appropriate to do, I would like to ask dmatheny a question about this product. Does it have a wireless reciever with a single USB connector? If so, how does it work with a KVM? I have a similar Microsoft wireless mouse/keyboard combo and I love it. I highly recommend it, and I wouldn't want to give it up! I am in need of a KVM, since I added a second computer, but I want to use the same product with which I am satisfied. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

No problem, I always like to find as much info as possible online before making a purchase and I don't mind providing input for other people.
************
The wireless receiver on this set is a single USB device that's about the same size as a typical USB key (~1 1/2 inches long). I can plug that into the USB port on my KVM and it works just fine switching between multiple computers. I'm using an Avocent SwitchView DVI KVM and I have the wireless receiver plugged into one of the standard USB ports on the KVM instead of the special keyboard/mouse port. The main downside to plugging into a standard port is that the KVM hotkeys don't work. Unfortunately, if you plug into the keyboard/mouse port the special buttons on the keyboard (such as volume, calc, etc...) don't work anymore - so you're giving up something either way.

I've found that I'd rather have to push the KVM button to switch and have my keyboard be fully functional than have the hotkey switching feature with no access to special keyboard buttons.

Another minor issue with using the standard USB port on the KVM is that the PC will detect the keyboard and mouse every time you switch to a new computer. This detection takes less than 2 seconds on my PCs and there is no user intervention required. You just hear the Windows USB insertion beep and you know you're up and working.

All this info should be accurate as long as you aren't using a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo - those just won't work with a KVM since you would have to setup the Bluetooth association everytime you do a KVM switch.

I hope this is enough information to answer your questions. I don't blame you for not wanting to switch away from a keyboard you already know you like. It was a real pain to switch away from my old Bluetooth keyboard that I really liked, but I guess that's just life :).

I have an IOGear KVM switch and just got this Microsoft Wireless 7000 keyboard/mouse set. I have a usb splitter setup on the dedicated mouse port, and it actually works with all the usb devices attached to the splitter. In otherwords if I plug the USB wireless transmitter into one of the splitter ports (on the dedicated mouse port), the mouse and keyboard work. The problem is the the kvm "switch" hotkey (scroll lock twice) does not work. The switching hotkey will only work if the keyboard is on the keyboard port. unfortunately the keyboard works if i plug in the transmitter to the keyboard port, but the mouse does not :(... Alas.

Good for my wrist.

Strengths: full-sized keyboard, 4-way scroll wheel, lots of shortcut keys, not rechargeable battery

Weakness: mouse is not very comfortable to use, mouse scroll wheel does not click, and side buttons on the mouse is not properly placed

my doctor recommended me to get the keyboard and mouse with ergonomic design for my wrist
This keyboard has most of the features I need like hot keys to my favirotes and sound volume adjust.

"mouse scroll wheel does not click"
Do we talk for the same keyboard? The mouse button is very clickable. I found this very usefull when I use Mozilla Firefox.

Don't Waste Your Money!

Strengths: This is the worst product I've ever seen. The keyboard does not type. It has taken 25 mins to type these words.

Weakness: Keyboard does not type.

You have to hit the keys over and over again, but nothing types. A chisel and stone tablet would be faster! My PC has 8 GB and Windows 7 so it is not the PCs fault.

This is the ultimate keyboard designed especially...

Strengths: - no stress for the wrists. - wireless!! - comfortable for speed touchtyping.

Weakness: - The rubber parts of the mouse are pealing from the extensive use - designed for touchtyping, designed for me :)

I use this keyboard for more than a year.
This is your keyboard if you use touchtyping only. The first two weeks I found a lot of difficulty to use it since I found this rather strange position. Now I can not live without it, it is true. I buy an extra one for the office (already have one at home) and I am not gonna change for any other type of keyboard.
The only remark that I have is the pealing rubber parts of the mouse.
This keyboard worths every penny.

Natural Wireless Ergonomic Desktop 7000 Keyboard

Strengths: Comfortable, uses small usb receiver, customizable extra keys

Weakness: not rechargable

I decided to give this keyboard a try. It takes times to
used to it because of an ergonomic shape. If you type a lot it is a perfect keyboard as it makes your wrist a god rest. I wish I had one at work. I didn't notice any disconnection problems. Mouse is larger than a regular mousses but it is perfect for my long fingers. Microsoft could have made this set rechargeable as some Logitech combos, but batteries life seems to be pretty good. I am impressed with this Microsoft product.

Microsoft Ergonomic Wireless Keyboard/Mouse

Strengths: Good contruction; nice feel

Weakness: So-So range; takes getting used to; expensive

First off, take my review with a grain of salt, as this is my first foray into an Ergonomic keyboard!

Microsoft makes good keyboard, as I had the Laser Desktop 6000 V2 before, and was very happy with it. I got a rebate on the 7000 ergonomic, so decided to give it a shot. I like the feel of the wrist rest, and especially the "touch" of the keys. While a bit noisy, they are smooth and you know when you've made contact. However, I just have not gotten used to the keyboard layout. I know it's supposed to be better for you to use a keyboard this way, but I just don't like it! Too many years using a regular keyboard, and I'm not ready to change. The mouse was also a little funky, as it is quite tall, and you have to put your whole hand around it to use it. Unfortunately, I decided to return the unit and keep my Desktop 6000 instead.

I think that Microsoft used the same wireless technology in this unit as the 6000, as it has the same shaky range on the mouse. While the keyboard is extremely responsive, the mouse would occasionally get a little lost.

Comfortable, High Quality Wireless Desktop Set

Strengths: Small wireless receiver; comfortable split layout; good key action; comfortable mouse

Weakness: Function keys are not full sized

Overall, this is a very comfortable, high quality wirless desktop set. In a substantial improvement over previous Microsoft wireless desktop sets, the wireless receiver is a very small device about the size of a stick of gum. It doesn't have cord leading to a wireless receiver; rather, the part that plugs in to the USB port is the receiver. Thus, there is one less thing to clutter up your desk.

The keyboard has a very nice curved split layout. The key action is good. The keyboard is comfortable when typing for long periods of time. One negative, however, is that the function keys are only about two-thirds the size of normal keys, making them a little harder to press. It's not a major flaw, however.

The mouse is excellent. The shape is extremely comfortable, though if your hands are small, it might be too large.

The wireless connection seems to be solid. The range is fairly limited, as with most wireless sets, but I didn't have any problems.

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000 - keyboard , mouse

THE GOOD: Easy-to-adjust keyboard height and angle; split keyboard design with raised center makes for comfortable typing; programmable quick-launch keys cut down on mousing; unique mouse design keeps wrist at a neutral angle. THE BAD: Keys and scroll wheel offer a bit too much resistance for ultimate comfort; mouse is right-handed only; inconvenient thumb-button placement. THE BOTTOM LINE:...
