Good idea for the multi computer householdStrengths: Convenient, supposed to be access from anywhere Weakness: Slow, software is buggy, dealing with WD for tech support. We have about 6 computer in my house...three laptops, three desktops. Primarily, my wife and I use two different laptops and we both take pictures. So, be able to access the drive from anywhere in the house, regardless if the main desktop is awake or not. Unfortunately, I have NOT been able to get the web access established. The main reason is that the first drive I bought was just flat DEAD! It powered up...but it wouldn't show up even in the local network. There is 3rd party software to install to set up the Anywhere Access...and it crashed my computer BAD! Even a system restore didn't bring it back. Only after going back two restore dates was I able to get the computer back up. I did this twice to confirm it was the software. Dealing with WD was incredibly frustrating. Finally, my case got escalated to a higher level...and very nice guy called me directly to work out the issues. Unfortunately, it appears that I have some non-compatible software...something called Webfolders...that make uploading FTP files a lot easier. No big deal for the house...but it makes me REALLY nervous to try it on any other computer, like at work, where I do NOT have access to the Restore feature due to permissions level locking that feature out. 0% of readers found this review helpful. Nice Drive
Strengths: Fast search speed, required little setup, very easy interface, capacity gauge is a nice feature, on/off with computer
Weakness: drive is already set up in FAT format out of box, larger cache would have been nice
I bought this drive because I was looking for something larger to store my videos and music. I plugged the drive in, and it immediately connected to my computer. I have not experimented with the remote access feature yet. All of the software is preloaded onto the drive, and the only negative is that the drive was set up in FAT format out of the box. It was simple enough to copy and paste the software onto my desktop and reformat/partition the drive to my liking in NTFS. A great feature is the on/off feature. When you shut down the computer or turn it on, the drive will follow in suit. Also, when not being used, the drive will go into power save mode, and take 5 seconds at the most to start back up again when needed. The search speed is also very fast. All in all, I am pleased with this drive. I'd recommend finding out which type of My Book is best for you first, but it is definitely a quality product
