MSI's 8800GT - A Solid Performer

Strengths: Factory Overclocked, Price

Weakness: Availability, Bundled Software

I bought this card to replace my eVGA 7800GT CO SE which just wasn't up to the job of running Crysis any higher than a mix of settings on medium and low. This card did not disappoint. I can now play Crysis with all settings on high. After playing the first two levels of Crysis with my 7800GT, I'm glad I waited for the 8800GT to continue. The difference is amazing. I wonder if I'm playing the same game it looks that much better!

I'm sure the above goes for any 8800GT, but where the MSI stands out is it's factory overclocked (one of the highest I've seen). The Core (+60 MHz), Shader (+160 MHz), and Memory (+50 MHz or +100 DDR) Clocks are all higher than normal (600MHz/1500MHz/900MHz or 1800DDR). I have only ever owned MSI and eVGA cards and highly recommend both brands. If you can find it, the MSI card also seems to be offered at the best price/performance. Some other cards come bundled with games, but this one does not. The software that is included is a waste, just install the card and use NVidia's drivers. I found the MSI software outdated, useless, buggy and I would even blame subsequent O/S BSOD crashes on it after I installed it (though it may have been a bad install somewhere along the line of installing all the bundled software and drivers). Anyway I uninstalled everything from the CD and just used NVidia's downloadable drivers and everything went smoothly thereafter so do yourself a favor and if your going to use the included CD only do so as a coaster and save yourself some hassle.

Hottest Video Card out - If you can find it!

Strengths: Outstanding performance, incredible price, DX10/shader 4.0 support.

Weakness: Out of stock at stores with best pricing.

Hopefully will be back in stock at decent price (below $250) before Christmas. This card has better performance than the more expensive GTS version but at a price that is more than $100 less. I have one on order for $225 shipped and want a second one, but can't find it for my price.

MSI 8800GT

Strengths: Superior cooling good for overclockers.

Weakness: Cooler takes up two slots

This card has an excellent cooling solution that is far superior to the reference nvidia design. The fan is also very quiet but is wide and will consume an adjacent system slot. This is a great card to buy if you are looking to overclock your 8800GT for the extra "free" performance boost. Most 8800GT cards overclock very easily using the excellent rivatuner application.

Great Video Card Value

Strengths: Great for the money as long as not more than $250

Weakness: not enough available

The hot setup is two 8800gt in sli and not 8800gtx. Two of these cards is more powerful than one 8800gtx. Great deal for this line of cards, good enough to buy two now!

LOUD and HOT

Strengths: Fast

Weakness: the stock fan is LOUD!!!!!, Runs HOT

I ran 3DMARK06 (basic/Default) and scored 11.5K. a big improvement over my old 7900GT-KO's (SLi) score of 9K. I put a second one in SLI and only scored 13K. The fans were so loud my wife made me take them out until I got a Zalman VF900 to put on them. I ended up RMA one instead and adding a VF900 to the other for my son's System. I ordered 8800GTS (G92) for my system. I will see how loud/fast it is before buying another for SLI. I will post the review of the GTS under EVGA 512-P3-N841-A3 GF8800GTS 512MB. with in the next few days. hope this helps someone else. This card is loud and I only had it artifact on me once after playing crisis for about an hour. no issues after I put a VF900 on the card I kept for my son's system.
System specs: ASUS M2N-32 SLI Dlx w/AMDx2 6400, 2GB Ballistic mem, 3x250G seagates in a RAID5 (dual boot XP and Vista), ASUS Lightscribe DVD-R in an ANTEC Sonata II pushing Dell 24" Ultra sharp LCD - running EVGA GF 7900GT-KO in SLI until I get the 8800GTS (G92) installed. MWave rocks for service.

Great Card

Strengths: FAST! Plays games great!

Weakness: Gets hot.

this is a great card if you can find one. Great for those of us on a budget, and looking for a card that can play games with the bells enabled. I cant wait till I have enough to buy a second card to run in SLI!!!! This set up should be incredible!! I would highly recommend you purchase this, as it is a great card.

Does your 8800GT run hot?

Strengths: Runs Crysis smooth as butter on high settings. Allowed me to overclock my CPU even higher.

Weakness: Stock cooler doesn't hack it. Crysis would crash in 5 minutes unless you run the fan at ear-splitting speeds.

I ran 3DMark06 as soon as I installed the card but was disappointed with the score that was lower then the one my 8800GTS posted. I ran 3DMark2001, 03, and 05 with the same results. I immediately ordered a Zalman VF1000LED cooler and after installing it ran the 3DMarks again. 3DMark06 went from 10,200 to 12,700 and Crysis runs great with no fan noise.

GeForce 8800 GT OC review

The new GeForce 8800 GT is not only considerably faster than the 8800 GTS, but amazingly it is also much cheaper.
