ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 review
AMD has proven itself, successfully launching the Radeon HD 3870 X2 on schedule and making it available immediately. The 3870 X2 uses two GPUs on-board but unlike other multi-GPU implementations, you don't need a supporting motherboard to use it. Top

Nicely done
Strengths: DX9/DX10/DX10.1 compatible, excellent performance, will work with non-ATI chipset mobos, does not require Xfire mobo, 512MB (effective per GPU)
Weakness: Very large size, Xfire support requires updated 8.3 catalyst drivers, suboptimal fanspeed configuration via BIOS, requires two (2) PCI-E power connectors.
I won't bother to argue the relative performance traits of the 3870X2 vs dual 3870s, 9800GX2, 8800xxx. That debate has and continues to be beaten to death each day. Suffice it to say, the 3870X2 delivers SOLID performance at high/highest settings for all the software that I own. If you are in the market for a mid-high range GPU, keep an eye open for deals on the 3870X2.
This particular VisionTek implementation is well built but bare bones. Aside from the obligatory cables and adapters, there are no free accessories, bonus gifts, or games. Call of Jaurez is NOT included, despite all the markings on the packaging.
Setup is straightforward but be advised that the card is very large and requires TWO power connections, dual 6pin PCIE minimum or 6pin + 8pin in order to use catalyst Overdrive overclocking features. Also be advised that the card is HUGE. Check your mobo to confirm your PCIE slot will not obstruct your SATA or other ports.
Another point I feel compelled to mention is that many users report high temperatures on their 3870X2s (applies to all mfg brands). The cause here is the default fan speed tables not configured to operate the cooling fans at a higher speed. I don't consider this a definite issue as the cards continue to operate at the default fan speed and resulting temperatures. But users that are concerned can easily rectify the problem by using the latest version of RivaTuner to override the fan speed setting. By default, the fan on the 3870X2 is reasonably quiet, due to the low rpm. Increasing the speed beyond 50% will rapidly increase the audible noise.
Overall, the card is excellent and easily recommendable.
