Red Hat Linux 9 Personal

Strengths: The "How To?" books saved me a lot of time on REDHAT, and its a whole lot cheaper then Micro$oft$ Windows, nice software bundle(comecs with over 5Gig's of software) just hade to get XMMS for MP3.

Weakness: Its more of a buisness linux then a personal desktop, and the startup is slow as hell no matter how fast ur computer is.

Its a whole lot better then RHL 8.0 just needs a few tweaks hear and there, the best instller ive seen yet, and has a user friendly desktop that i prefer over Windows anytime, and is great for gaming, just get WineX from transgaimg.com (u just have to fork over 15 dollars) and in no time ull be playing ur favorite games like Counter-strike, battlefield, or everquest. all in all its an awsome OS, but if u are a Newb to the max in linux then u sould try other linuxes like Suse, or mandrake.

Red Hat Linux 9 Personal

Strengths: Well supported, well documented, easy to install, consistent user interface

Weakness: Compared to Windows and other major Linux distributions, Weaker in multimedia applications supported because of their decision to only make available applications with freely available software.

Red Hat Linux 9 Personal is Red Hat's best effort to date in the personal desktop system space. Red Hat is clearly the leading Linux software vendor, overall, but they've been playing a bit of catchup with their desktop systems because server software and enterprise systems have been their main focus.

The previous personal edition, Red Hat 8.0, made some major strides toward improving the personal system edition, and this current version goes even further along that path.

This software presents the user with several different ways to install (or upgrade from previous versions, going back to Version 6.2). I doubt that any other Linux vendor can provide as broad a range of installation and upgrade options, especially the ability to upgrade from releases that go back 2 or 3 years in time.

Red Hat provides consistency in the presentation of the user interface not seen, until recently, in their products. The desktop manager choices are about as current as you can get.

Is there anything that Red Hat doesn't do well? There is room for improvement in the availability of multimedia applications, and some users have been complaining of scenarios in which certain applications have a tendency to freeze their systems. I've not had problems with either of these things.

Overall, I find Red Hat Linux 9 to be a very sound choice as a useful, relatively inexpensive desktop system, capable of browsing the Web, editing files, sending and receiving Email, and viewing office documen

Red Hat Linux 9 Personal

Strengths: Well arranged graphical displays, easy installaton and fairly easy operation if you know linux. I has the great advantages of Unix text management.

Weakness: NO installaton manual at all, hardware support needs a second thought, no Internet setup support at all even they ask you to register but you are on your own if you are in trouble.

Installation easy worked well but no sound and no Internet connection. My MB with built in sound chip (on redhat HCL) did not work and created lot of lockups. I have two ISP Comcast for my cable and AOL for regular modem but no Linux support. Finally I made the cable modem work (naturally without redhat help)and started my communication with redhat about sound and lockups and other things. Finally I used an external sound card and every thing works fine. Basic fact you can not have built in harware support which always works(because the hardware changes). My XP with all those built in driver did not detect the sound but there is the driver CD wich has even Linux drivers but very cumbersome. RedHat needs to do a lot of work in these area. I have to solve yet Internet modem connecton because RedHat does not support it. Yes they have a modem setup pannel (for ppp connection) but it does not work because the modems today are WinModems (maybe). So I bought an external modem which supposed to be "hardware" modem but it did not work either. I found an ISP with Linux support bought an external modem still no Internet connection with modem (it worked in 5 minute under Win). Based on the above facts I can draw four conclusions:
1 RedHat lacks on operation manual in print.
2 Harware detection has to have external input sometime.
3 They have to have Internet support (show working modems,
drivers and Linux ISP'S)
4 RedHat is not ready yet for prime time on the Desktop.
