Maxtor Storage Drive 200GB Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to set up, stylish looking

Weakness: None so far

I am always satisfied with Maxtor Products, and this is one of them. It is portable and good-looking. This hard drive is very easy to set up. The transfer speed is quite fast, and the price is not expensive. Well, it is a nice product for daily data back-up. I like it very much, and I would always stick to Maxtor products.

Maxtor Shared Storage Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Itlooks good. Very stylish.

Weakness: Sloooooooooow. I am currently restoring from my snap server image, 10 gig worth. So far it has taken 14 hours and estimate it will be at it for another 6. This is a hard drive to hard drive restore.

Don't bother. Having had a snap server for 5 years, I'm going back. This thing is slower than a floppy. Having 4 computers on a my network(all xp pro) set up identically as for as network settings go, only one will see the drive. It's not worth the effort to figure why the others don't see it. It's going back and I'll stay with the snap.

You must have had this configured incorrectly. It transfers 1 gig in about 2 minutes on my system.

You should check out the Synology DS-106e, it's a great little backup server, and it has GBe for speedy file trasnfers. And it was reviewed on Tom's Networking http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2006/06/28/synology_ds106e_full_featured_nas/

Maxtor 200 Gb Shared Storage is a marginally useful...

Strengths: It is expandable, hackable, small and quiet.

Weakness: Speed, heat

I bought the Maxtor Shared Storage (MSS) drive to act as Network Attached Storage for my home network. It was fairly easy to setup if you use Maxtor's Quick Start software but it definitely needs a much better manual. Once its setup you don't need to install any drivers and can use it from any computer on your network. The MSS runs Linux and is hackable (there is 3rd party firmware at openmss.org and various media server packages like Firefly available for it).

It comes in a long silver colored metal case with a metal mesh front. Besides the Ethernet port it has two USB 2.0 ports which allows the addition of two flash drives or external USB drives to the MSS. The extra drives must be formatted in FAT32. It comes in a metal case with a fan and a metal mesh front.

The biggest drawback to the MSS is its speed or rather the lack of it. When copying video files to the drive I found it to be very slow. I have Fast Ethernet NICs in the computers on my network and the MSS is supposed to support Fast Ethernet. I found it took nearly a hour to copy about 10 gigs from my main computer. This might be fast enough for someone dealing with small files like Microsoft Office documents and the like but its too slow for multi mega or gigabyte files. I also wouldn't recommend more than 2 people trying to use the MSS at the same time as that would slow it down even more.

I also found the MSS to get very warm even with the good heat conduction allowed by the metal case, the front mesh and the cooling fan. Even though it isn't particularly noisy there seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to when the cooling fan would turn on. The MSS would feel very warm to the touch and the fan wouldn't turn on while at other times the MSS would be cool and the fan would be running full tilt.

All in all I'd say the Maxtor Shared Storage NAS is only useful in very narrow circumstances. Otherwise its a waste of money.

Sharing files made easy

Strengths: Easy setup, comes with needed cable

Weakness: Can get somewhat warm, fan sometimes a bit noisy

I bought this Maxtor Shared Storage drive to hold and share my music and photographs. I found it easy to setup and install using the Maxtor Quick Start software. It even came with its own Ethernet cable so I didn't have to go out and buy one. Now I'm sharing my music and photos between several PCs without a problem.

Solid construction, quiet, powerful.

Strengths: Excellent interface and printer support.

Weakness: none

The enclosure was made with solid metal and looks good in an office setup. The file server software is very well excecuted with lots of function. Make sure to update to the latest firmware to support one-click backup feature.

Powerful, great PC/MAC compatibility

Strengths: All-in-one (file server, print server), good mini computer inside for good user control, MAC compatibility is good. Stylish.

Weakness: Need better manual

This is a great product if you need printer server as well as file server. The two USB ports in the back allow you to attach up to two printers or two additional USB drives. The speed is decent- ~ 3hrs to backup my mac mini (20GB) through wireless network + router.
With the complexity of the user setup, (user group, access right) the manual should explain it in more details.

Shared Storage Drive 200GB Hard Drive

Strengths: All in one hard drive, quick,

Weakness: none so far

I always buy maxtor brand hard drive. high quality. This one gives you more than I know. A family can share a harddrive and we will not worry that our laptop doesnot have enough room any more. We can store music, movie inside and donot have to put in every family PC.

Maxtor Shared Storage Drive 200GB Hard Drive H01P200

Strengths: Easy install, good price, configurable, 2 USB ports, access control, supports Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP, reasonably quiet, updates and backup SW available for download from the Maxtor website.

Weakness: Documentation, difficult to change drive name, limited printer support.

I purchased this drive recently from Staples on clearance for 55AC. I had not heard much about it, just knew that the price was right and thought I would give it a try. It comes in an aluminum case with a small exhaust fan, can be positioned vertically with an included plastic cradle, or horizontally with some included rubber feet. Also included in the box are an Ethernet cable, a power adapter, a quick start CD, and a User's Guide

It has 2 USB ports which can be used for additional external drives and/or printers. These ports will also support flash drives, however they do not support a usb hub, which I was hoping to use to expand the # of available ports.

The quick start CD installs a configuration utility which lets you administer the device. You can manage accounts, folders and access on the drive, and view and change drive settings like power management (ie, inactive drive spin-down) for the drive as well as any connected external USB drives.

Performance wise, I was able to write a 1G file in about 4 minutes, read time (same file) was about the same. Installation was simple, and there are software updates and a backup program available for download on the Maxtor website.

On the negative side, the documentation is not that great, if you encounter an error code during setup you are pretty much on your own figuring out what the problem is. The configuration utility allows you to change the name of the drive, however, windows networking still sees the old drive name. This causes problems when connecting to the drive. Also, 30 printers are listed as supported, although to be fair, there is a disclaimer that printers not on the list still may work, they just have not been tested. An AIO connected to the drive will only print, ie, the rest of the functionality of the AIO is lost.

All in all, I am happy with the drive and would recommend it. It does have some limitations, however, if you are willing to look beyond them, the drive works great as a NAS for a home or small office. 4 stars from me.

Drive is Pretty Fast and Very Useful

Strengths: Everyone in the Home or Office Can Back Up to it

Weakness: None

The reviewer before said this is a slow device? NO WAY!!!

It's fast enough (I just did 14 GB in about 30 minutes). This is a fantastic solution for ensuring that you keep your data in two places. I am a on-site computer repair tech and sell quite a few of these to my customers. This is a plug and forget device. Works as advertised and is an easy way to manage your data safely. Set it for 2 AM back ups and you won't be bothered by your PC slowing down while it backs everything up.
