Salvage your data with ease!

Strengths: worked flawlessly and fast

Weakness: none so far

My computer sparked and literally blew up when I tried to insert a usb thumb drive. Fortunately, my two internal sata drives were not harmed and so I was able to access the data using the BlacX. It worked perfectly and very fast even through the usb connection. It saved me all the time of installing the drives internally and setting the CMOS and wrestling with power cords, cables, screws, etc. What a time saver. Now I can use as an extra drive to transport and back-up data such as my music database. This scenario has happened to me several times and this is the first time I have recovered so easily.

So convenient. Why didn't I think of this?

Strengths: Ability to swap drives while the unit is on. Accomodates both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA drives. Useful eject button.

Weakness: Awkward location of power button.

After several hard drive upgrades, I've amassed a collection of perfectly working drives, but no way to use them without springing cash for multiple external enclosures. But with this drive dock, I can swap between drives like giant thumbdrives. Great for making full backups.

The power button is at the rear which is not where I'd expect it on a device that encourages hot swapping drives. The unit is a bit hefty, which I assume is to prevent the unit from tipping over when a drive is plugged in.

Nice; but lacking the true concepts & ideas of a...

Strengths: Lazy mans access to internal hard drives. eSATA & USB.

Weakness: The power cable is only 42" Long, extremely short. There is no cooling for the hard drive built in.

The "hot swapping" is poorly designed, because when you safely remove the device from windows BlacX doesn't power the drive down, so if you don't use the on/off button on the BlacX and wait 30-60seconds for the drive to finish spinning you will damage the hard drive. The hard drive gets extremely hot, even when there's no activity, would have been nice if there was a fan built in underneath that blew air up. The price is a little steep for all that it's doing, but I guess your paying for the name, although can't say anything specular about that. I would buy another one of these simply because it makes swapping drives easy if used correctly, and buy another power supply else where that actually has a decent length to it, since it doesn't take the standard computer power cord. Would have been nice to also include FireWire as well, wonders if you can use both USB and eSATA at the same time...

Terrible drive, only worked for one week

Strengths: nice, I also go the one with the 4 port USB hub

Weakness: quit working, extremely poor company customer service

This dock worked great for about a week, and now I can't get it to work on both my Vista 64bit and Vista 32bit computers. I even tried it on a Mac and XP computer at my office and it didn't work. contacted Mwave for a refund and would have been charged a restocking fee or would have to ship it to the manufacturer who said the same thing. Manufacturer basically said that there was no reason it shouldn't work and that I would have to pay to ship the old one to them, and then pay to have them ship a replacement to me and it could take 6-8 weeks. Main let down was that Mwave wouldnt even do anything...definately a first for poor cust service from Mwave...

ThermalTake BlacX 2.5"/3.5" Hard Drive Dock

Strengths: Good Idea for IT guys

Weakness: Constantly disappearing from ANY windows USB connection or platform. I see a design problem here. My wonderful new tool is completely unreliable.

I have had this about 30 -60 days. I am highly disappointed that it is so unreliable, I will have to find another. Big black eye for Thermaltake.

Not so hot.

Strengths: Nice design idea.

Weakness: Mine kept disappearing from XP and I would get constant delayed write failures. It did that on three computers. I gave it away and went back to my trusty Sabrent SATA/IDE to USB cable.

I had no luck with mine but it could have been a lemon. I find the SATA/IDE to USB cables work great and I will be sticking with that.

Probably the best computer accessory... EVER!

Strengths: eSATA and USB2.0 so it's quick. Ease of swapping drives.

Weakness: NONE

I had amassed 15 removable hard drive bays (some IDE/some SATA) and was getting tired of swapping them with their dedicated trays. This solution was perfect. Now, as I convert my 250GB IDE drives to the 1TB SATAs (trying to consolidate for travel purposes), I can quickly trade out drives so organizing all the data is simple.
I recommend this drive dock to anyone that wants to add hard drive space without having to install it drive into a computer case or external enclosure.
With this device, I can buy a drive and be using it within seconds of opening the box. It's great.

eSATA and USB at the same time

Strengths: eSATA and USB, 3.5" and 2.5" at the same time

Weakness: none

I have several 2.5 and 3.5 inch hard disk drives. And I used external enclosure before to switch the disks. But now with this charming gadget, I can change drives without any difficulty. Also the eSATA is much faster than USB.

Must buy it

Strengths: Pro: excellent, and fast, and easy to use.

Weakness: Cons: None

I just got for a week and I love it. This is easy installation I have ever done in my life. My son can put it together. This is fast and easy to use. Just like that.
I love it. Thanks thermaltake
