Canon 24-70 f2.8L - Great, Fast Lens

Strengths: Super sharp photos in low light situations, true, vivid color, outstanding quality

Weakness: Heavy, wish it had a wider focal range

Tires of pictures that just were not quite sharp enough for my tastes, or having that dreaded flash hot spot, I knew I needed a faster lens. The tough choice was to go with the 24-105 f4L IS or the 24-70 f2.8L. While the 24-105 had the IS to compensate for the fact it was a f2.8 and had a wider focal range, I was not quite convinced from reading the reviews alone. I rented both lenses to test them out for myself. The reviews were positive for both and both performed well. It boils down to personal preference and sometimes trying them out is the only way to know. i find myself shooting more indoor portraits and prefer natural light. The 24-70 f2.8L is excellent in these conditions, better than the 24-105 f4L. Outdoors, the only real difference is on the telephoto end, where the 24-105 obviously prevails. Since I already have a 75-300 lens, my decision was made and I have not regretted it at all.The lens is heavier than others I have used. So if you are planning on walking around with it all day on a trip, you might find it a bit uncomfortable. The 24-105 f4L would probably be a better choice, especially if you are outdoors. The decision is all about personal preference. The thing is, I want both!

Great Lens

Strengths: Fast, sharp lens, great pictures.

Weakness: None.

What a great lens. This lens has been a favorite of many since it replaced its well-regarded predecessor, the 28-70mm. It shoots images that are very sharp and have excellent contrast and saturation. It's sharp wide open and only gets better when stopping down. The USM (Ultrasonic Motor) focuses very fast, and full-time manual focusing is allowed. I've been nothing but pleased with the pictures I get from the 24-70mm. The constant f/2.8 aperture is great for shooting indoors and produces a very nice bokeh (background blur) when shooting portraits. This lens is much heavier than comparable consumer-grade zooms, but I don't object to the weight. I actually like the heft and feel of this lens on my 20D.

100% Agreed! Tamron and Sigma "equivalents" cannot compare.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

Strengths: Super sharp, rapid and quiet focus w/ Canon 10D.

Weakness: heavy

My first "L" lens from Canon. Absolutely outstanding. Focus with my Canon 10D is rapid and quiet. Results show good contrast and are exceedinly sharp from corner to corner. Only drawback is the weight; but it is worth it.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

Strengths: fast focusing, rugged, best in canon's EOS line

Weakness: Very pricey, could use an image stabalizer feature

This is canon's fastest focusing, ruggized standard zoom lens. It's marked as an "L" series lens (for luxury) and is used by pros all over the world. The photos I've taken with the lens are brilliant and sharp. I've used it in low light with my EOS-20D and at f/2.8 and ISO 800 it still takes sharp photos.

The lens is a bit heavy--obviously because it's such a fast (f/2.8 lens) and needs so much glass to capture the light. It also lacks Canon's IS (Image Stabalization) feature which would be nice and is in some of Canon's larger L series lens.

Canon 24-70mm F2.8L "We are the Champions...."

Strengths: Extremely Clean, Hefty(adds to innate IS aka Newton's First Law of Motion), Makes girls go "wow, that's a biiiiiig lens, wanna take my picture??", sharp wide, and stopped down, & Tones Biceps.

Weakness: Catches' attentions when in a den of thieves (like London, Paris, or Amsterdam[the weed is good at least]), makes weaklings complain about heft cuz they refuse to be fit.

I love this lens. As an everday lens for the street, Landscapes, or even studio photography working with models, it's difficult to beat. Unless you're looking for 600mm lenses w/ a 1.4x converter to shoot sports illustrated swimsuit edition this lens comes as a close second ^_o

You see, as a heavy lens, it will work out your arms and increase your stamina as you have added weight to your typical shooting setup. The more you take shots, and the longer you stay out daily, the better you'll feel. [Disclaimer: Not suggested as a complete replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, but it's better than sitting on your butt every day sipping soda instead of drinking water and eating carbs and meat instead of vegetables and fruit].

If you're a woman, guys will take you seriously as a photographer.

If you're a man, women will take you seriously as a photographer and ask for you number to shoot them at later dates. [No guaratees, I just know it works for me cuz I'm also fit as a fiddle(and for being in my 20's)].

Sex-based stereotypes aside, this lens will get a lot of notice from onlookers as well as undesirables such as thieves, muggers, and murderers. Not everybody likes their picture taken, and this can make you look like a spy or something. Shifty fellows will take offense and take your lens(along with your body[i mean lens body, unless you're a fit and trim lady]).

Also for this lens, Canon QC is great, about 80% of all 24-70mm F2.8L lens and dslr body combinations sold are ultra sharp, the rest might have difficulties. Also make sure your camera body is adjusted properly for back/front focus issues with regards to this lens and you should eliminate another 17% from the bunch. That last 3% will require a return.

If that Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG or Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di is looking good, be aware that with the Sigma, your odds of obtaining a good copy is 1/20, and with the Tamron, 1/10. Both still won't have the contrast and neutral color that the Canon L Lens possesses, but they are mighty cheaper.

Past experiences dictate that the Sigma and Tamron will be a smidge warmer(faint yellow cast).

Good luck, spend the extra dollar(if you can on a Canon 24-70mm F2.8L.

Best of the best

Strengths: Sharp image, fast lens

Weakness: Heavy, pricy, no IS

This the best lens I have ever used. Focus is fast and quiet on my digital rebel. There is no complain about image quality. Sharp from corner to corner. A amauter like me can shoot like a professional now.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

Strengths: Totally Silent operation, Super sharp, Crystal Clear, THE BEST lense available for EOS Cameras. NIKON users only wish they had a lense like this.

Weakness: Wicked Price!

It's expensive but once you try it, you will never buy Non L lense again....I used to own bunch of cheap lenses and never really cared about the quality of the pictures. but once I have seen my dad's EOS 1DS with this lense on it, I decided to spend the extra bucks to get it. Then I realized the superiority of this lense.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens

Strengths: Crispy clear image. Quiet and fast focusing.

Weakness: Pricy. A bit heavy. Inner focusing would have been better.

The best standard zoom lense you'll find in the market today. Focusing is amazingly quiet and fast. Excellent sharpness and color. I hope Canon would come up with 24-70 USM IS in the future. Until then, no lense would beat this one!!

A great buy

Strengths: very sharp and fast, wide range

Weakness: a bit heavy and expensive

I think every photographer that considers himslef/herself a professional needs to own this fabulous lens. The pictures come out so sharp and the lens so fast. The only complain I have is that sometimes when I shoot weddings, the lens is getting heavy for me, but overall I love this lens

The Best

Strengths: Range, quality of the photos, everything

Weakness: Weight, No IS

This is my everyday walk around lense for a Canon 10D. Superb for portraits, landscape, everything. I think with the 75-200 I'll have what I want covered.

When I bought the 10D the story was this was THE lense to have..and I endorse that.

Good overall lens

Strengths: 24-70

Weakness: bulky

Excellent Lens!

The 24-70 I mostly use it for real estate photography on a 5D. I also use it for aerial pictures although it is a bit heavy for it.

For interior shots it is not the best, I use m

Just take a look

Strengths: said above

Weakness: price, weight, dark corners at 70mm

I can't believe it's Canon lens, it seem worst than Sigma. The lower corners become black after contrast adjustment. If I knew, i wouldn't pay my bloody money for this heavy zoom.

vicky835036, why don't you send the lens in for warranty if the lens came with a scratch.

If the lense was scratched by other than during the manufacturning process, it should not be considered in your review score.
