A top notch drive.Strengths: Very fast, quiet, low heat. Weakness: none Purchased this drive and have to say it\\\\\\\'s one of the best i\\\\\\\'ve used. My old Seagate drive is quite noisy but this drive is virtually silent. Comparing to my old drive, runs faster too. Great drive and highly recommended. 97% of readers found this review helpful. silent and fastStrengths: very quiet drive, only clue the drive is running is thru the HD LED, Vista rating is now at 5.9 Weakness: none I have only been using this drive for a few days and I am very satisfied with the performance. Will have to see if it will last as long as my other seagate drive 67% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Four out of five have had uncorrectable errors in...Strengths: Seagate honors its warranty, but you'll use it a lot on these drives. Weakness: Develop uncorrectable read errors in very short time frame. I bought two of these in May of 2008 to use in a RAID mirror. Both developed uncorrectable read errors within the first few weeks of use and I sent both in for warranty replacement. Within a year, one of the refurbished replacements developed the same problem, so I sent it in for warranty replacement. Within 8 hours of using that refurbished replacement, it too developed the same problem, so now I've got to send it in as well. Each time you send one of these drives in you spend about $12-$14 on shipping and insurance, so that $50 price tag on these drives is deceptive, because I've ended up spending a lot more than that on each of these drives to try to keep them functioning properly. The only good thing I can say is that Seagate's warranty return process is fairly easy to manage, I just wish I didn't have to use it so frequently. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Seagate Hard Drive Fiasco Grows, according to...
Strengths: Cheap -- these were selling for $55 in December, 2008 With just two platters, I expected these drive would be robust.
Weakness: Those manufactured before December, 2008, would unexpectedly lock due to firmware problems. I bought six of these drives between February, 2008, and November, 2008 -- two of them failed.
The problems I had with these 500GB 7200.11 Seagate disk drives was affirmed for other 7200.11 Seagate disk drives in Slashdot.org,
hardware.slashdot.org/...
.
One of my Seagate ST3500320AS worked for only 1 month,
then it gave NO response -- as others have said, it became a brick whose data could not be extracted,
even though the data on the platters supposedly remains perfect.
I wouldn't buy another Seagate 7200.11 series disk drive,
but will buy the series which follows it,
which I trust will not have these firmware problems.
.
Most disk manufacturers eventually make a notorious disk drive -- this is Seagate's notorious disk drive -- so goes chance.
I hope Seagate gets through this notoriety, as I've had many good disk drives from them over the past 15 years.
As Seagate becomes more aware of the 7200.11 problem (it can't just be replicated, I gather), they are starting to bend-over-backward to remedy the problem.
.
Having paid but $55 for these 500GB disk drives,
and having paid $600 for a Seagate Hawk 2GB disk drive 10 years ago, I'm not enraged at the 7200.11 fiasco.
I buy more disk drives than I buy hotcakes,
and expect to resume buying Seagate disk drives in a few months.
.
I would like to see protection for carrying "internal" disk drives offsite, lowering the chance that disk drives fail.
I hand carry disk drives in a brief case to another site.
The only protection for "internal" disk drives I've found is the packaging they ship with.
Seagate once provided a good Seashell (plastic clam shell), Newegg used bubble wrap sometimes producing dead-on-arrival, and Zipzoomfly provides a somewhat extravagant foam box the size of an external disk drive around the "internal" disk drive.
.
Above performance, when we think about consequences,
WE PREFER RELIABILITY.
