Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Very easy installation. NTFS format was quick. Constructed with heavy grade metal. Necessary cables (Firewire and USB) included in kit. Software easy to use. OneTouch II backup - a breeeze.

Weakness: None.

Performed both a Firewire and USB 2.0 test of 445 folder and 5,590 .BMP files copied from the internal hard drive to the Maxtor One Touch External 300GB Hard Drive. Both tests were 82.5 Gig copies. Took 93 minutes for both the Firewire test and the USB 2.0 copy tests. This is approximately a 15 MB/sec transfer. Your copy speeds may vary according to your individual system. These bulk file copies...

Great Drive

Strengths: Easy to intall and use. Fast. Goes into sleep mode when not in use.

Weakness: Gets hot (hasn't caused any problems), the one touch software hasn't proven useful to me.

I love this drive. I also own an earlier version, the 250GB USB 2.0 which is also great. I use the firewire connection on this drive and like this model even better because when estimating the time remaining to complete copying files, it seems more accurate and the estimate doesn't fluctuate as wildly as my older USB model. I also use it to capture video files from my MiniDV camera and it has...

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to use once you get it working

Weakness: Software doesn't do networked drives.

I had substantial problems getting the drive up and working. There were 3 problems, 1 due to my hardware, and the others software related. 1. After several calls and several hours (not on hold -- actually talking to a person) of trying to get the drive to complete a backup, but receiving WinXP error messages with delayed write failures (which would usually leave the drive in an unusable state...

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Looks, size, quiet, ease of setup, great software.

Weakness: None

I purchased this unit to use as a separate backup for an aging computer, and two recently purchased digital cameras. The USB connectivity and external design were attractions for this product. This unit is quite compact and nice looking. Setup was an absolute breeze and the Dantz backup software was both understable and flexible. It allows you to backup an entire hard drive or allows the user to...

Terrible Product

Strengths: Em, well, it's heavy?

Weakness: Drive enclosure cooling is poorly designed. Your hard drive will fail due to the heat build-up.

Tip: when searching for information on a product search with word failure in the search term. Why? Because I didn't and thought the One Touch would be a good buy. After it failed and I was looking for solutions was when I found out about the thousands of other One Touch buyers desperate to solve their hard drive failures. I believe there is/was a class action suit against Maxtor for selling a...

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to set-up and install. Straightforward instructions.

Weakness: The drive will appear as 'locked' in WIN XP until some data is stored to the drive. This was confusing at first.

This drive is fantastic. It is easy to set-up, the one button funcitonality is simple, and from a price/gig perspective is a great deal. I have found no problems with the drive whatsoever, and the case design and blue LED indicator are very cool.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: 1) huge capacity, 2) easy to use, 3) looks great, 4) quiet, 5) comes with excellent dantz retrospect software, 6) supports both usb 2.0 and firewire

Weakness: none

This drive's quiet, easy-to-use, and has huge capacity. Dantz Retrospect, the backup software that comes packed with the drive is simple to use and gets the job done. I didn't buy the drive for the software, but Retrospect really is great.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to setup. Lightweight for the size. High Speed USB and Firewire connections.

Weakness: I have not found any yet.

I was looking for large capacity (300 GB), as I wanted to warehouse my 2,000 plus CDs on the drive. Also, I am using it as shared network drive, so that all my computers and laptop can access and use the drive. Everything has worked perfectly. I highly recommend this drive to anyone who has a huge need for space.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy setup and installation. Product design is functional and stylish. Very quiet. 16MB buffer and 7200rpm reduces lag in data retrieval. ON/Off power switch.

Weakness: When installing, font on Maxtor installation setup extended beyond window and therefore made some words impossible to read. Not a big deal to me, but novices may be a bit confused by this.

Although I have only had this item for a short time I am already extremely impressed. Unit is by far the sleekest in its' class (even the Firewire & USB cables are clear coated so you can see the silver jacket underneath...nice touch Maxtor). On/Off switch is essential to me since I can leave the unit plugged in, yet power down the drive when not in use to protect data from...

Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB External Hard Drive

Strengths: simple setup, storage capacity, construction & design

Weakness: none

Maxtor has solved my digital storage problems with the One Touch. Sleek design, quiet, solid contruction and very simple to setup. As a digital artist and photographer with a large body of work Maxtor has eliminated my need for a big library of backup disks to store my work. I highly recommend the One Touch!
