Samsung ML-1710 Laser Printer

I bought one of these for my son's...

Strengths: Takes a lot of abuse and keeps on working

Weakness: None

I bought one of these for my son's school in September 2003. It is the workhorse printer of the school's computer lab and has performed like a champ despite the abuse that middle schoolers and tech-clueless teachers have dished out. I cannot recommend this printer highly enough.

I've always used inkjet printers...

Strengths: Very easy set up, operation, reliable, fast, cheap toner costs

Weakness: a larger paper tray would be nice

I've always used inkjet printers for my home computer and have been so frustrated by ink cartridges that dry out or clog. Frankly, have never had a good long term experience with an inkjet. When my most recent inkjet (an Epson) bit the dust after six months of use I said "no more" and decided to take the plunge and get a laser. Most of my printing needs are black and white, standard text -- this Samsung is incredibly cheap and practically a no brainer to set up and use. I have never had a single paper jam in the 4 months I've owned it and I'm still on the toner cartridge it shipped with (supposedly good for 2000 pages but I switched to its toner saver mode and I'm sure I must have printed 5000 pages by now.)

All in all, I'm thrilled. I might get a second small color printer for my home network to print photographs, but for day to day black and white, this printer rocks

I got this printer at Microcenter...

Strengths: price, print quality, speed, small

Weakness: none, except maybe usb interface if you don't like that

I got this printer at Microcenter (similar to Fry's) for $100 after rebates. It was well worth it. It takes about 30-45 seconds to warm up to print the first page (by comparison my work printer takes about 1 second, even in energy save mode! (but it's >$1000)). But once it's warm, it will shoot out the pages very quickly, probably at its rated 17ppm. 600 dpi resolution is fine, trust me. I don't...

600 dpi resolution is fine, trust me. I don't understand the desire for 1200 dpi.

I believe the printer is 8MB (which is fine), not 16MB as pricegrabber says as of 10/26/03.

Have used many more expensive...

Strengths: economical to own, good quality, easy to use.

Weakness: noisy

Have used many more expensive units that do not give better quality or value. Would recommend to others and will acquire additional printer for my son and wife to use.

Purchased at checksnet.com because...

Strengths: Fastest compact laser I've ever used.

Weakness: No weaknesses. Samsung makes quality products.

Purchased at checksnet.com because I needed MICR magnetic toner cartridge to print checks and they appear to be the only source with MICR for all Samsung laser printers.
